The dark retreat guidance of Dzogchen Yangti, accomplishment through reading. Kunsang Ngedon Wangpo. The dark retreat guidance of Dzogchen Yangti, accomplishment through reading. Kunsang Ngedon Wangpo. The dark retreat guidance of Dzogchen Yangti, accomplishment through reading, is complete. I prostrate to the feet of the glorious and precious Lama, the embodiment of all Buddhas. Here, concerning the actual practice of the Great Perfection, the spontaneously accomplished luminosity, the supremely secret practice of daytime yoga has already been explained above. For the sake of easily practicing the three sections of the nighttime yoga scroll, it is written down in black ink. Among these, what is particularly special, surpassing anything else, is the unique practice of establishing the spontaneously accomplished great bliss of the ground appearance. The guidance of the formless dark yoga, which connects one to the state of Buddhahood within seven days, also has three aspects: the beginning, the middle, and the end. First, as explained above, in a place and time that are perfectly complete, in a small room with a covering underneath, the dark room should be one fathom and one arrow-length wide on each side, and one fathom and one cubit high. It should be well plastered with mud, so that there is not even a pinprick-sized hole. The door should be four fingers high, with an entrance and a curtain. A sleeping place should be made in the direct center, and near it, there should be a hole to remove obstacles and a crooked door for carrying food and drink. A hole for disposing of urine and feces should be made wherever it is convenient for the legs, etc. In particular, for beginners who are not accustomed to Trekchö and daytime yoga, it is beneficial to alternate between a "checkered room" and the dark room at first, so that obstacles and problems do not arise. The method for this is as follows: directly in front of one's gaze, to the east, make a wide "Chinese star" hole, one span high. To the south, directly in front of the heart, make a square window just large enough to fit one's head. To the west, directly in front of the navel, make a crescent-shaped clear hole just large enough to fit the fingertips. To the north, at the edge of the cushion, make a round hole just large enough to fit the thumb. All of these should have covers, and preparations should be made to remove them if necessary. If it is not possible to do all of this, it is sufficient to have just one hole on the east side. In any case, one should enter the room and sit on a cushion with inner space, relaxing the activities of the three doors. If one is a beginner, one should face the eastern hole at sunrise, and the southern hole in the morning.

Hole. The hole of the west in the evening. At the north-facing hole where the sun sets. Afflicted by the three postures of the body and the way of looking. In the northern hole, practice until the bindus are connected like a string of beads. Until realization, engaging in practice is without obstacles and greatly beneficial. Moreover, it is said in the tantras: First, search for the three places of origin, dwelling, and going. Furthermore, in the words of Samantabhadra himself: The aim of this practitioner is, first, on the basis of the state of Trekchö (Tibetan: ཁྲེགས་ཆོད་), prolong the innate duration of equipoise. For those who have familiarity, it is sufficient to enter the darkness from the beginning. The second general meaning, the actual practice, has two parts. The first is: In the Yangti scroll, it says: In a good dark room, on a clean cushion inside, after generating the supreme bodhicitta, sitting in the vajra posture, generate yourself as Vajrasattva, meditate on the guru yoga on the crown of the head, the tip of the eye, the tip of the nose, and the tip of the mind, combine them into one, and then pray. Therefore, first, taking the common and special bodhicitta as the preliminary, hold the pride of any wrathful deity, and dispel obstacles with mantras, mustard seeds, and guggulu. Set boundaries. After that, possess the profound path of the four-session yoga. There are also two types of guidance: effortless and effortful. Among the effortless, there are two: the self-sounding sky yoga and the self-existing ocean yoga. First, the self-sounding sky yoga is: In the first scroll, it says: The body should be the seven-fold posture of Vairochana, the eyes like the vajra crown, at a distance of twenty fingers, look at the space between the eyebrows. The single wisdom eye is without impurity, the meaning of which should be known from the oral instructions. The mind is without conceptualization, the tip of the nose directed towards the sky in front, and remain without distraction. Therefore, the body is in the posture of the seven-fold Vairochana, the way of looking is to look upwards at the space between the eyebrows at a distance of twenty fingers. The mind abides in the state of Trekchö (Tibetan: ཁྲེགས་ཆོད་) beyond thought, and especially pay attention to the three points: the body does not move, the mind is not distracted, and the breath is extremely slow. Why is this? It is said in the tantras: Therefore, when the mind is seized, signs appear and experiences arise. This also shows that as signs of the five winds being seized, there will be smoke, white clouds, mirages, sparks, rainbows, and sounds.
