A Concise Note on the Stages of Practice, Abridged from the Precious Essence Instructions of the Kunzang Gongpa Kundü. Pema Lingpa the Third, Tsultrim Dorje. A Concise Note on the Stages of Practice, Abridged from the Precious Essence Instructions of the Kunzang Gongpa Kundü. Pema Lingpa the Third, Tsultrim Dorje. A Concise Note on the Stages of Practice, Abridged from the Precious Essence Instructions of the Precious Essence Instructions of the Kunzang Gongpa Kundü, is hereby presented. Homage to glorious Samantabhadra, the primordially pure expanse! Here, to record how to receive the precious essence instructions of the Secret Mantra Intentions United, first, the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment: This precious human body endowed with eight freedoms and ten endowments is difficult to obtain, no matter how one thinks about and examines it in terms of cause, number, or essence. Thinking that you have obtained it yourself is a great fortune and merit. Think of it as rare from the bottom of your heart. Second, death is impermanent: It is not enough to have obtained leisure and endowment, it is uncertain when one will die, and one will surely die. There is no way to turn back death. It is also a great fortune that I have not died yet. Now, even just for today or tomorrow, there is no certainty that I will not die, so feel a burning pain in your heart. Meditate on the hairs of your body standing on end. Third, the teaching on cause and effect, taking the suffering of samsara as a path: It is not enough to die like that, it would be tolerable if one did not feel any happiness or suffering after death. But it is not like that. From the cause of virtue comes the result of happiness, and from the cause of non-virtue comes the result of suffering. For example, from a sweet seed comes a sweet fruit, and from a bitter one comes a bitter fruit, etc. The law of cause and effect is infallible, and it is proven by direct perception. Now, it is important to remember that we want happiness and do not want suffering, so it is important not to confuse the acceptance and rejection of virtue and sin, which are the causes of happiness and suffering. Thinking about the suffering of samsara is unbearable. Therefore, one must abandon sin. Even ordinary people value cause and effect, and if they do not, they are not considered civilized. Especially religious people, and especially great meditators, cannot do anything if they do not value cause and effect, so this is the teaching on cause and effect. Fourth, the teaching on the four immeasurables, cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment: There is no sentient being who has not been one's parent. Now, just like one cherishes and loves one's mother

, because all sentient beings need (loving-kindness). Let alone treating them as enemies, even remaining neutral is not permissible. One should cultivate loving-kindness like a mother bird hatching eggs, compassion like a mother facing the murder of her son, joy like a child who has lost his mother finding her again, and equanimity like a hermit hosting guests. Coordinating with the breath, exchanging one's own happiness and the suffering of others, thinking that all beings possess happiness and are free from suffering, this is the guidance of loving-kindness and compassion. Fifth, taking refuge: Without taking refuge, one will not enter the gate of the Buddha's teachings, and therefore cannot be liberated from samsara, so taking refuge is very important. Therefore, here too, the benefits and reasons for taking refuge are the same as in general. Clearly visualize the field of merit for refuge: In front of oneself, there is a wish-fulfilling tree, with flowers covering the sky, branches covering the space, and roots covering the earth. On top of it is a huge jeweled throne, covered with silk. On top of the lotus and sun and moon, is one's own root guru. Not in an aged form, but with youthful vigor. The right hand is at the heart in the teaching mudra, and the left hand holds the book of profound guidance on the meditation mudra, sitting in the full lotus posture. Wearing a lotus hat and monastic robes, etc. Abiding as if seeing it directly now. On the crown of (the guru's) head, is the image of Tenzin Sizhi Namgyal, a Gelong Vajradhara. On his head, is the heart-son Tenzin Chokyi Nyima, with his right hand in the teaching mudra and his left hand in the meditation mudra, abiding in the form of a renunciate. Or, these two holy beings did not appear in a successive manner of ripening and liberation, but received it directly from the two teachers. Since I (the author) have received ripening and liberation from both holy beings, it is also acceptable to visualize the two heart-sons as inseparable and one. On his head, is Tenzin Drupchok Dorje Shije, wearing a pandita hat as a symbol of his omniscience, holding a rosary of bodhicitta with both hands, abiding in the form of a Gelong. To his right and left are the two regent teachers, in the form of renunciates, possessing the sublime wisdom of manifesting the realization of the essence.
