There are four main points regarding the method of protecting and pacifying livestock: first, a reliable source; second, showing the substances; third, explaining the mantra; and fourth, showing the method of practice. The first point is: it was given by the great teacher Padmasambhava for the sake of King Trisong Detsen's doubts. The king asked: Great teacher, in the degenerate age, will protection be able to resist diseases well? The teacher replied: This is not just protection, but includes substances and mantras, and generally binds the Eight Classes, so it is able to resist. At that time, the king and his entourage took off their hats and prostrated to the teacher, offering many gold and silver measures, as well as much pure rice wine and new wine. After that, it was gradually passed down to me. Second, collecting the substances: the skin of a slaughtered sheep, medicinal herbs, bamboo yellow, saffron, cardamom, nutmeg, amomum, costus root, musk, aucklandia, guggul, ghee essence (ghi vaṃ), black sweet flag, single-clove garlic, black pearl, horse mushroom, feces of pigs and wolves, snake meat, and potent poisons. These are substances for internal use and application. Also, guggul and black pearl, horse mushroom, feces of black dogs, madder root, aucklandia, horse mushroom, garlic, rusty human bones, dead person's hair, white mustard seeds, human and pig fat, musk, mouse feces, snake meat, and buckthorn seeds. These are substances to be burned for fumigation. Third, the mantra is as follows: Om Nang Nang Tiste Tiste Pur Pur Nan Tiste Tiste Pur Pur Nan Lhang Lhang Tri Tang Shag Shar Shar Dung Dung Rab Rab Nan So Soha. It is crucial that this mantra is not missing or excessive. Fourth, the method of practice is: cut the sheepskin into small pieces, with the flesh side up, and write the above mantra completely on each piece with black ink. At dawn, take a small or large amount of star water and mix it with the livestock. Then, grind the substances for application into a fine powder and sprinkle it on top. After that, visualize yourself as the yidam and first generate the mind of enlightenment.
