A Concise Explanation Differentiating the Practices for Entering the General Empowerment: A Mirror of Clear Moonlight. Written by Lodrö Thayé. A Concise Explanation Differentiating the Practices for Entering the General Empowerment: A Mirror of Clear Moonlight. Written by Lodrö Thayé. A treatise called "A Concise Explanation Differentiating the Practices for Entering the General Empowerment: A Mirror of Clear Moonlight" is presented herein. Namo Guru Deva Dakiniye. Through the power of intention and the strength of the ritual possessing qualities, from the bonds of beginningless delusion in an instant, freeing and awakening manifest wisdom, I bow to the glorious and powerful master of the mandala. This method of maturing the root of Vajrayana, being profound and vast, is difficult to realize. However, in order for those with initial karma to gain some certainty, I will briefly explain it in easy-to-understand language. That is, the essence of the Vajrayana path is complete in every way, and especially with regard to the tantras, transmissions, and instructions of secret mantra, whatever listening, contemplation, or meditation is done, it is absolutely necessary to have the empowerment as a preliminary, and to protect the vows obtained from it without deterioration. If one enters secret mantra without receiving empowerment, not only will one not achieve siddhis, but one will also fall into great degeneration in this and future lives. Therefore, one must first strive to ensure the maturation of one's being. Although there are many differences in the systems and practices of the new and old secret mantras, the essential points of their meaning are the same. Anu and Ati are superior to the earlier translations in terms of both meaning and terminology. Here, as the occasion arises, I will explain a little according to the tradition of the old secret mantras. There are five aspects to this: the essence, the definition, the divisions, the general purpose, and the explanation of the specific practices. The first is that, based on the assembly of two causes and four conditions, the function of establishing the qualities of the state of enlightenment in the mindstream is to manifest the sprout of liberation or to ripen it into a state of potentiality that is certain to arise. The co-existing cause is the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, which is the Dharmata that has always been naturally present in the mindstream of sentient beings. If this is absent, then even empowerment will not be obtained. As it says in the Empowerment King: If the supreme empowerment is not within oneself, how can it be obtained through empowerment? Even if one empowers barley and peas into rice, there is no appearance of rice in them. Therefore, the student

In order to make the equivalent cause of the Mother Tantra produce results by means of skillful methods, just as a flower matures into a fruit. The qualified Vajra Master purifies the disciple's vessel through the interdependent connection of the empowerment substances blessed by the power of samadhi, which is the co-operative cause, i.e., from the Hevajra Tantra: "Who empowers whom? Empowerment is for the sake of purifying the continuum and obtaining power." It is said. The disciple who is empowered, who has faith and does not transgress the vows, and is suitable as a vessel, is the condition of the cause. The master who empowers is also the reality of self, deity, secret mantra, recitation, and absorption, i.e., mastering the combination of the five branches of mantra, is the condition of the master. The learned lamas adorned with accomplishments, who know the activities and rituals of empowerment and the key points of the oral instructions without error, are the condition of the object. The vase empowerment, etc., where the earlier empowerments open the way and the later empowerments arise successively, thus realizing the blessing, and realizing it manifestly with wisdom, so that the disciple understands the meaning of each empowerment, is the immediately preceding condition. Secondly, the definition: From the sound of "Abhiṣiñca," because it washes away or removes impurities, it is empowerment, in order to wash away all the impurities and habitual tendencies of the three doors and their equal parts. Just as a vessel, having been cleansed purely, is suitable for pouring essence into. From the sound of "Abhiṣeka," because it establishes capacity, it is empowerment, i.e., establishing the ability to practice the path and the special capacity to obtain the fruit, just as a father entrusts something to his son. Also, because it causes to ripen, it is empowerment, causing the three doors and their bindus to ripen into the three vajras and great bliss. Thirdly, the divisions: In the lower tantras, the Action Tantra, in order to arrange the interdependence of abandonment and realization, there is the water empowerment; and the vows, mudras, and crest jewel empowerment of whatever family one belongs to; as branches, there are recitation transmission, bathing, washing, and protection, the three, and the auspicious eight substances, generosity, etc., that make it up. In the Performance Tantra, on top of the water and crest jewel, three empowerments are added: the vajra bell, the name empowerment, and the subsequent permission of the mirror, tweezers, and Dharma teaching, etc. The number of branches depends on the difference between the tantras and the individual masters' treatises.
