Thus, after the completion of the general preliminaries, the second, the special preliminary of approaching entry into the generation and completion stages, is: From the root practice: "In a pleasing, solitary place," therefore, a place that is in accordance with the mind, free from harm from thieves and the like, without the traffic of people, without the clamor of sounds and the like that cause thorns to meditation, water that is beneficial to the body, and where water, trees, and other conducive conditions are complete. It is important to rely on a solitary place blessed by the lama and dakinis. As stated in the Six Dharmas of Meditation: "Many always quarrel, even two become rivals. Like the bracelets of a young woman, one should dwell alone." As it is said. There, what is to be abandoned are all non-virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, and all unspecified actions. Moreover, until stability is somewhat attained, even if it is a virtuous action, if it harms samadhi, it should be temporarily abandoned. What is to be relied upon is an authentic, holy lama with experiential realization, and means of livelihood that are not mixed with sin. Here, if one performs recitation, practice, and activities in connection with the generation stage, then, according to the practice method, one should also gather the special equipment needed there. In particular, as a cause for the stability of samadhi, one should cut off the intense fatigue of the body, the idle talk of speech, and the constant conceptual thoughts of the mind, and rely on the three leisures, making a strong vow to engage in yoga. Furthermore, possessing the eight concepts of abandonment as an antidote to the five faults is an indispensable part of meditating on the instructions, so it is necessary to remember this.

So. Regarding the five faults, as stated in the "Madhyāntavibhāga": "Laziness, and also the key instructions, forgetfulness, sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults." This means: laziness in not enjoying practice; forgetting the meaning of the words to be meditated upon; being controlled by sinking and excitement; not relying on the antidote when sinking and excitement arise; even after sinking and excitement have subsided, applying the antidote too forcefully will become a fault. The eight applications to eliminate these faults are as previously stated: "Abiding and abiding therein, and cause and effect, not forgetting the object, and sinking and excitement, and their removal, manifest action, and when peaceful, abiding in reality." This means: to counteract laziness, generating the intention to meditate, which is abiding; abiding therein is diligent effort; the cause of generating intention is faith; the result of diligence is that the three doors are extremely tamed and capable. To counteract forgetting the object, is the mindfulness of not forgetting the meaning of the words; the awareness of observing whether sinking and excitement arise or not; when sinking and excitement arise, the antidote of manifest action to remove them; when applying the antidote too forcefully, using equanimity and non-application as the antidote, these are the eight applications. These are the preliminary practices with special characteristics. Second, the main practice: If one has previously received empowerment in this mandala, it goes without saying. If one has not received it, then at this time, the complete empowerment is bestowed, or according to the situation, before the generation stage, the empowerment with characteristics is bestowed, and before the completion stage, the three supreme empowerments without characteristics are bestowed, thus ripening the continuum, and then introducing the teachings. In this regard, all sentient beings, from the beginning, abide in the indestructible vajra of body, speech, and mind, free from the confusion of the two obscurations, the inherent Sugata-garbha, but due to non-realization, the three doors of samsaric phenomena and their enjoyments, like dreamlike appearances, arise as sudden confused appearances, thus creating various contaminated actions, and being tormented by suffering. Therefore, the object to be purified is the Sugata-garbha, and the object of purification is the impure, sudden defilements. To purify these, first, through the generation stage, determine that these samsaric phenomena do not exist, but are merely pure appearances.
