The Dream Instructions of Vajrasattva's Mind Practice, a Written Record: Self-Liberation of Confusion. Lochen Dharmaśrī. The Dream Instructions of Vajrasattva's Mind Practice, a Written Record: Self-Liberation of Confusion. Lochen Dharmaśrī. The Dream Instructions of Vajrasattva's Mind Practice, entitled "Self-Liberation of Confusion," are present. Oṃ Svasti. Om, may there be well-being!). In the expanse of self-awareness, with grasping and fixation completely liberated, in the unchanging wind-mind, the luminous illusory deity, to the Lama Vajrasattva who reveals, I bow and liberate the dream-holding practice instructions. Here, from the minor instructions on the limbs of Vajrasattva's Mind Practice, regarding how to practice the dream instructions, there are two parts: the preliminary and the actual. First, the preliminary: "First, tame the mindstream with preliminary practices," it says. Initially, contemplate that this leisure and endowment is difficult to find again and again. Even having found it this time, one will certainly die, and there is no certainty when one will die. With the mindfulness of impermanence, and knowing that wherever one is born in samsara, high or low, all are waves of suffering, therefore, in any case, strongly contemplate the mind of renunciation that is without need, thereby urging on the mind with sorrow. Visualize the dwelling as a pure realm. In the sky in front, on a high and wide seat, visualize the Lama Vajrasattva in form, as the essence of the gathering of all refuges. All sentient beings, oneself and others, are terrified by the suffering of samsara, therefore, request protection, reciting, "What to do? Lama, please be mindful!" Thus, take refuge. Knowing all sentient beings pervading space as kind mothers, drawn by compassion that cannot be endured, vow to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and establish them in the state of perfect Buddhahood. For that purpose, practice the profound path. Visualize the Lama as the essence of the gathering of all refuges on your crown. With devotion that makes the hairs stand on end and tears flow, when one is able to grasp or master dreams, seize the opportunity and pray intensely. Finally, the Lama dissolves into light and merges from your crown. Visualize your own body clearly arising as the body of Vajrasattva, empty and luminous. Abide in the unwavering state of awareness, where thoughts are cut off, and appearances, meditation, and cessation are like illusions, resting naturally in the essence of self.

End. Second, the main part has three sections: 1. Holding onto the dream state; 2. Practice; 3. Unifying meditation. First, holding onto the dream state has two parts: 1. Holding onto it during the day with unwavering mindfulness; 2. The essential instruction of forceful advice at night. The first is: “Although the power of habit is absent, Outside of appearances, appearances arise again, All the arising of clinging, negation, affirmation, etc., Like a dream, without distraction, Always hold with intense desire.” Therefore, in a secluded place, generate strong renunciation towards the suffering of death, impermanence, and samsara. All phenomena are unreal like illusions, but because they do not understand this, sentient beings wander in samsara. Thinking of these beings, generate unbearable, intense compassion, thinking, “Ah, how pitiful!” As before, with intense devotion, pray to the lama, praying to be able to realize the dream state and perfect the illusory body dream. After praying in this way, from the intense force of devotion, in this present, solid appearance, in an unreal way, establish your own awareness in the unceasing power of arising that vanishes like a shooting star. Like this, the good and bad of appearing objects, and all the arising of clinging, negation, affirmation, etc., to them, appear and are experienced from the power of the confused appearances left as habits on the mind, but other than that, there is not even a particle that is truly established. These things, appearing is appearing, real is not real, like that, generally knowing unreality, and especially holding the calculation of knowing it as a dream, I have fallen asleep, this appearance is a dream, is illusion, I have definitely fallen asleep, focus single-pointedly on this recollection. In post-meditation, in all activities such as walking, standing, lying down, sitting, eating, speaking, etc., think, “I am going to die, there is definitely no time to waste,” and without separating from the appearance of the lama, with devoted longing, and especially, intensely generate the thought, “I have fallen asleep, this walking and standing is also in a dream.” Like that, in all times of meditation and post-meditation, continuously generate recollection, then appearances will vanish like they have no substance, and relax and let it dissolve, abide in a non-conceptual state. After that, focus the mind on all appearances of self and others, thinking, “All of this, appearing is appearing, real is not real,” and especially thinking, “I have fallen asleep, all these appearances are just a dream,” like that, cultivate without distraction with intense recollection. The second
