Lipe Rogyi Teachings RR5 The Flower of Explanation on the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutra 1-114 The Flower of Explanation on the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutra Explanation of the Nature of the Treatise The Flower of Explanation on the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutra. In Sanskrit: Mahāyāna-sūtra-alaṃkāra-vidoṣa-puṣpa-nāma. In Tibetan: The Flower of Explanation on the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutra. I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three times! In this auspicious eon, Those who have perfected their deeds, I prostrate to a thousand complete Buddhas! This ornament of all the Great Vehicle Sutras, Created by the future Buddha Maitreya, I will explain. These five dharmas created by the noble Maitreya, who attains Buddhahood in one lifetime, are said to have been composed by the teacher Simhabhadra after asking the noble Asaṅga in Tuṣita. Some teachers, such as Abhaya, believe that it was composed immediately after the compilation of the scriptures. The other four are explanations of the sutras contained within their respective treatises, such as the Perfection of Wisdom. This treatise explains the meaning of the extremely numerous Great Vehicle Sutras. Regarding the commentary on this treatise, some say that the explanation of the sixty branches by the noble Vimuktisena should be regarded as being done by the noble Asaṅga; others believe that it was done by the teacher Vasubandhu. 1-115 Such a treatise, the first thing to be discussed is the nature of the treatise, and the classification of the dharmas it expounds. First, the meaning of the name: Mahāyāna (Great Vehicle), Pūtra (Sutra), Alaṃkāra (Ornament), that is, the sutra of the Great Vehicle, which has the dual function of making it clear and beautifying it. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are the objects of salutation of the translators. The named treatise has a total of five hundred verses or eight hundred and fifteen seven-syllable lines, the first verse takes 'showing' as the basis of the characteristic, starting from showing 'what', the object of showing is the noble Maitreya himself who knows the teachings and realizations of the three vehicles, and knows all the meanings of all that is to be known. How to show it? With pure and immaculate discourses showing the meaning of the Great Vehicle, the discourse is another name for the treatise, words and texts are the writing styles of letters and names, etc., from sound to meaning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like a lotus, the immaculate speech is described in the commentary as 'city dwellers' and so on. The speech that leads to the city of liberation, being melodious and pleasing, possessing eight qualities, is regarded as an explanation of emptiness. 1-116 Immaculate speech is related to names, words, and reasoning. Why is it done? To liberate beings from suffering. What is the cause? Compassion for suffering beings is its very nature. What does it do? It demonstrates the form of the supreme vehicle, the categories of Dharma. And for what purpose is it done? For the sake of sentient beings, where 'ལ་' is the fourth case, indicating purpose. How many aspects are shown? It shows prosperity, that is, the way of understanding reasoning, and the five unsurpassed aspects. The five aspects are: what is to be accomplished by the commentary, what is to be known in detail, what is to be contemplated, what is inconceivable, and the nature that is in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. The commentators explain this by saying that it involves reasoning, generating the mind of enlightenment, the conduct of a Bodhisattva, the realization of non-abiding at the extremes, and engaging with the Dharma of enlightenment, elaborating on it in various ways, but this is not correct. Because the examples and meanings do not align, it is difficult to understand, and it does not engage with the text. Therefore, first, apply this to the general subject matter of the Great Vehicle and explain it. In the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*, it says: 'The five dharmas, self-nature, the eight consciousnesses, and the objects of the two selflessnesses, all are included in the Great Vehicle.' The five dharmas mentioned here are: name, form, discrimination, suchness, and perfect wisdom. Among them, name is the name, word, and letter of the Great Vehicle, appearing as the expresser. Discrimination is the wisdom of hearing and thinking that grasps the connection between the two. These must be accomplished at the beginning of entering the Great Vehicle, so they are what is to be accomplished. Then, one must differentiate between the truth and falsehood of what is to be known, which is done by distinguishing between self-nature, essence, and characteristics, so it is what is to be known in detail. The eight aggregates of consciousness are what one must contemplate, asking how many consciousnesses sentient beings have. Suchness and perfect wisdom are not known by ordinary beings, so they are inconceivable. The Dharma that accords with the aspects of enlightenment, having an object, that is, the object of the noble four truths, is the object of the two selflessnesses. 1-117 Chapter One: Explanation of the Body of the Treatise Chapter Two: Explanation of the Body of the Meaning Expressed by the Treatise --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
