Samadhi and so on. There are eight types: Focusing on external large, beautiful, and ugly forms by perceiving them as internal forms; focusing on external small, beautiful, and ugly forms, these two; focusing in the same way by perceiving that there are no internal forms, these two; focusing on the arising of white light, showing external forms as white, color white, like white, by perceiving that there are no internal forms, and similarly, focusing on yellow, red, and blue, these four. The first two dominations arise from the first two liberations. The third and fourth also arise from the first two liberations. The latter four arise from the impure liberation. The characteristic of the fourth, the sphere of exhaustion, is: the samadhi and so on that delights in the object of focus, which is desired at will, with liberation as aspiration and domination as control. There are ten types: exhaustion of earth, water, fire, wind, white, red, yellow, blue, space, and consciousness. Among these, the first eight accomplish the magical powers of transforming material objects into something that has never existed before, and transforming the continuum of what exists into something else, and so on. The exhaustion of space accomplishes the magical powers of walking in the sky and having no obstruction to anything, and so on. The exhaustion of consciousness accomplishes the qualities of being without afflictions, and so on. The fifth, the characteristic of being without afflictions, is: the samadhi and so on that protects following the arising of afflictions in the continuum of others, based on oneself. There are two types: the samadhi of being without afflictions of the Hearers and the Buddhas. The sixth, the characteristic of knowing after thinking, is: the samadhi and so on that knows the knowable of the three times as it has been thought. There are two types: Hearers and Buddhas. The seventh, the characteristic of individual correct knowledge, is: the samadhi and so on that engages without obstruction in the characteristics of the meaning of names, together with detailed classifications. There are four types: Dharma, meaning, exact words, and eloquence, each individually known correctly: namely, the enumeration of names of all pure Dharmas, and the characteristics of the Dharmas, and the meaning of the intention, and the meaning of the words of the world and the treatises, and the Dharma.
