He said that it does not agree with this. Second, establishing the tenets of the Madhyamaka school has two parts: identifying the essence and how it becomes a lineage. First, the sutra says, "Bhagavan, what is the meaning of the word Bodhisattva?" It means, the basis for realization, such as generating Bodhicitta and the path of seeing and meditation combined with it, is the Bodhisattva. So, what is the nature of the Bodhisattva itself?" asked. The meaning of the word Bodhisattva is non-existent. Why is that? Because the sutra says that enlightenment is neither born, nor existent, nor existing, nor an object. The explanation of this is, this shows that because enlightenment as the basis is not substantial, the nature of the six sense bases is the cause of the use of the word Bodhisattva, but not the meaning of the word that has become a real thing. The meaning of that is this: the basis for establishing in name is Bodhicitta, and it is also the six internal sense bases such as the eye, and there is nothing else besides that. Those are also the nature of emptiness in the ultimate sense, so it is shown that the nature of the six sense bases is the lineage that has become the basis for establishment. Then, a separate nature is also not a lineage, because if the meaning of lineage is to act as a basis or cause, then a nature separate from the subject is not real, so there is no meaning of lineage. A separate subject is also not a lineage that exists in its own nature, because it depends entirely on causes and conditions, so there is no meaning of the word nature. The nature of any subject is also not, because that would extend to the fact that there is Buddha-nature even in the external realm. It is also not a state free from all defilements, because it has been transformed into Dharmakaya, and lineage is the state of cause. Therefore, the impure nature of the six internal sense bases that is inseparable from the subject is the lineage. Second, there are two ways of becoming a lineage: from the perspective of the basis and from the perspective of the cause. First, the nature of the six sense bases is inseparable from the subject, and that itself is the basis for establishment. For example, in name, the Bodhisattva itself is the basis for establishment, and in order to truly establish the Bodhisattva

Because the nature of the six internal sense bases, such as the eye, etc., of the object of focus, is emptiness. Thus, as it says in the Uttaratantra: "Earth abides in water, water in wind, wind abides greatly in space. Space does not abide in earth, water, or the element of wind. Likewise, the aggregates, elements, and sense fields abide in karma and afflictions. Karma and afflictions do not abide in proper attention. Improper attention abides greatly in the purity of mind." This is in accordance with the above statement. Second, practices, etc., arise from the cause of the previous internal sense bases of the Bodhicitta on which one focuses, because no other cause is observed. Since these are also empty in nature with true emptiness, the nature of the six sense bases, distinguished as the subject and predicate, is established as the cause of practice. Second, although the essence is not different, it is nominally designated as the lineage of the three vehicles from the aspect of temporarily serving as the basis or cause of the realization of the three vehicles. Likewise, from the difference of whether or not the conditions are taken away, it is nominally designated as two lineages: definite and indefinite. Furthermore, when it does not serve as the basis for the practice of the three vehicles, it is called the naturally abiding lineage. When it serves as the basis for practice, it may also be designated as truly taken by conditions. Third, refuting disputes is twofold: refuting disputes regarding the order. In the Great Commentary, it says: "Since it is the manifestation of the arising of the mind of enlightenment, liberation, and the aspects of determination, and those that are in accordance, shouldn't the lineage be explained only at the beginning? Why is it explained in this way?" Although that is true, that is the order of meaning, but this is explaining the result first and then showing the cause later, so it is the order of explanation, therefore there is no fault. Second, refuting disputes regarding the essence. In the Rays of the Sun, it says: "If there are some naturally abiding lineages, why is it that in beginningless samsara, Buddhas equal to the sands of the Ganges have passed away, but still there are sentient beings with naturally abiding lineages who have not been liberated from samsara?" That is because it possesses four kinds of faults.
