First, there are two parts: general and specific meanings. The first part has three aspects: the nature, the difference in states, and refuting arguments. The first aspect has two parts. The first part is refuting other schools' views: As the Mind-Only school believes, the sutra says, \"The lineage of Bodhisattvas comes from beginningless time, obtained by the nature of reality, which is the distinction of the six sense bases.\" They contemplate this meaning and say it is the distinction of the six sense bases. The six sense bases are the internal sense bases such as the eye. If the Alaya consciousness is not established, then the uncontaminated seeds existing on them, when encountering conditions, have the ability to generate realization of any of the three vehicles. If the Alaya consciousness is established, then it is the uncontaminated seeds existing in the Alaya consciousness. Both have existed from beginningless time by the nature of reality. That which is nourished by the condition of hearing and transformed into a distinction is the lineage of growth. If not nourished by conditions, it is called the lineage that abides in its own nature. Thus, whatever deep and vast Dharma is heard, which nourishes the uncontaminated seeds, is called the Mahayana lineage. That which is nourished by hearing the Dharma of mere self-pacification and the emptiness of the selflessness of persons is called the Shravaka lineage. That which can become the cause of realizing the absence of grasping is called the Pratyekabuddha lineage. Whatever uncontaminated seed is inherently determined to be the cause of realization of any of the three vehicles is called the definite lineage. That which can be transformed by conditions into the cause of realization of any of the three vehicles is the indefinite lineage. Whatever continuum has a greater obscuration, for the reason that even if there are uncontaminated seeds for a time, they cannot be nourished by the condition of hearing, is called the extinct lineage. This extinct lineage is gradually nourished by the conditions of hearing and thinking, and when it becomes powerful, due to its immediate cause and the cause of the supreme Dharma of the path of application, the first moment of the path of seeing arises, so it is also called the noble path lineage.

It is also called seed. Because it is nourished by the cause of hearing, it is also called the habit of hearing. The six internal sense bases, such as the eye, which it itself focuses on, symbolize the individuals of all three vehicles, so it is also called the difference of the six sense bases. If it were not the nature of reality abiding in the continuum of sentient beings from beginningless time, then because there would be no cause of equal share in the first uncontaminated moment, it would follow that sentient beings would not attain liberation. Therefore, it is not newly produced by conditions, but because it abides naturally from beginningless time, it is considered to be the naturally abiding lineage. The lineage with the characteristics as described above, in the Ornament [for Clear Realization], is determined by way of eight topics: "Existence, excellence, and characteristics, sign and lineage, good distinctions, faults, as well as benefits, and two kinds of examples, four in total." This is done from the perspective of Mind-Only. Those who boast of explaining this text as Madhyamaka, if they determine the lineage in this context with those statements from the Ornament, they are extremely ignorant of the difference between the lineages of Madhyamaka, Mind-Only, and the text itself, and are thus proclaiming their own shortcomings. As stated above, the Madhyamikas do not accept the naturally abiding lineage, because it is a compounded phenomenon newly produced by conditions, so there is no meaning to the word "nature." For example, "Nature is uncreated and does not depend on others." Since nature in this way cannot be transformed by conditions, it should not be a compounded phenomenon. After contemplating this, the noble ones say that others are: "Lineage is the difference of the six sense bases. It is of two kinds: that which is properly taken by conditions, and that which abides naturally." They say. Those people need to explain the meaning of calling the naturally abiding lineage "naturally abiding." If it is a synonym for cause, then that which is properly taken by conditions is also that, so what is the difference in meaning? If it is a synonym for the nature of reality, then there is no fault. Or, their lineage is imputed, while this is characterized, therefore.
