Regarding the two ways of gathering the Abhisamayalankara, the first is to inquire. Addressing him as "Bhagavan," and so on. The answer is divided into two types: extensive explanation and summarizing the meaning. The first of these is the necessity of the three paths arising from wisdom, and the manner in which the true limit of skillful means should not be made manifest. The first of these is, addressing him as "Subhuti," until samsara exists, the Bodhisattvas who are assigned to benefit sentient beings, the path of the Shravakas, which is the realization of the absence of self of persons; the path of the Pratyekabuddhas, which is the realization of the absence of self of phenomena that are apprehended on top of that; the path of the Buddhas, which is the path of completely realizing the absence of self of phenomena—all these paths should be generated in the mind-stream through meditation-born wisdom, and all paths should be ascertained through hearing and thinking, just as they are in their own characteristics. Alternatively, they should be generated in the path of preparation, and in the path of seeing, they should be known as not having inherent existence. These paths of the three vehicles should also be completely perfected from the perspective of abandonment and realization. Among these, the realization of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is perfected on the first ground, because there the realization of the absence of self of persons reaches its ultimate conclusion. Abandonment is perfected on the eighth ground, because there all afflictive obscurations are abandoned. The nature of the realization of "as it is" of the Great Vehicle is obtained from the first ground, while the types of realization of "as many as" are perfected from the eighth ground, because there all qualities such as powers are obtained. At the very end of the continuum, the ultimate perfection of abandonment and realization is obtained. As it is said in the Ornament: "With the non-conceptual wisdom as an ornament, one purifies the Buddha-dharmas and the nature of all phenomena; the other destroys them as they are, and makes sentient beings fully ripened." Thus, the activities of these paths, abandoning what is to be abandoned, and ripening sentient beings, etc., should also be done. The second is, should all the activities of the paths of the three vehicles be done? To this, showing the special feature: these paths should not be made manifest in the manner of abiding in the true limit, the Suchness that is free from elaboration. Should they not be done at all times? Like a wish-fulfilling jewel and a wish-fulfilling tree, while not moving from the Dharmakaya, one should make the aspiration to be able to do the work of benefiting sentient beings, and become a disciple of the Bodhisattva stage.

Without having matured sentient beings according to their capacity through the path of the three vehicles, and without having completely purified one's own Buddha-field, both the container and its contents, as desired, if one manifests the true limit in those stages, one will fall into the extreme of peace, cutting off the benefit of others. If one has accomplished completion, maturation, and purification, it will not be so, because the accumulation of merit is complete, and therefore, from the form body, activities arise that are in accordance with the capacity of those to be tamed. Some of the ancients have said that the three—completion, maturation, and purification—should not be made an exception to not manifesting the true limit, because the word "exception" requires a contradiction in meaning, and there is no contradiction here. Furthermore, some say that the three—completion, maturation, and purification—are an exception, but they do not understand the nature of the general and the exception. The three—completion, maturation, and purification—are only implied here, not explicitly stated by the words, and the general and the exception are based on what is explicitly stated by the words. For example, after saying, "All are arhats, those who have exhausted defilements, all," one says, "Except for one person, namely, Ānanda." Therefore, here, it is explicitly stated that without completion, maturation, and purification, the true limit is not manifested, and it is only implied that after accomplishing these three, it can be manifested, but there is no meaning of general and exception. If one applies "they should do the work of the path" as general, then it might be valid to explain "they should not manifest the true limit" as an exception. Here, some explain the true limit as the Dharmatā in the Ratnagotravibhāga, which is also unreasonable, because without completion, maturation, and purification, one cannot manifest the Dharmatā that is free from all stains. Thus, it is said: Therefore, without attaining Buddhahood, one cannot attain Nirvāṇa, just as one cannot see the sun after abandoning light and rays. Furthermore, explaining it as the Dharmakāya is also irrelevant, for the same reason as before. Explaining it as annihilationist Nirvāṇa would be too extreme, because one manifests it after completion, maturation, and purification. Therefore, the true limit is a synonym for the Tathāgatagarbha.
