How is that? As it is said, "Even if the clouds do not take water, the ocean's water will not be exhausted." Because clouds take water from the ocean and then rain falls on Jambudvipa, resulting in the emergence of great rivers. The four great rivers, such as the Ganges, initially arise from the ocean, and because there is no other vessel to contain them other than the ocean, they ultimately dissolve and sink into the ocean itself. Why is that? Because for beings, the words and meanings of this commentary, the Pramāṇavārttika, are like the author himself; once passed away, one cannot find someone who can fully grasp them again. If someone thinks that because those with weak intellect and diligence cannot fully understand the meaning of this treatise, but those with outstanding qualities can understand it according to their own understanding, so it is unreasonable to say that one cannot find someone who can fully grasp it again, then it is not so. Not only do those with weak intellect not understand, but even those with great intellectual capacity cannot fully understand the profound suchness of this treatise. Not only do those with weak diligence not understand, but even those with extremely strong diligence cannot truly see the suchness of the words and meanings of this treatise, which surpasses other treatises on reasoning. Therefore, because this treatise is extremely difficult to understand, those with poor intellect and fortune will avoid this supreme treatise like moths avoiding sunlight. However, those fortunate ones who desire to obtain the courage of wisdom that does not depend on others to truly distinguish the nature of phenomena should rely on this treatise. This shows that the Pramāṇavārttika of Dharmakirti has the same nature as the sun, because it is similar to the sun in five aspects. Just as the sun has five qualities. What are these five qualities? It clearly shows beings what should be taken and abandoned, thus distinguishing between the right path and the wrong path; at the end of the kalpa, it burns all vegetation and so on; it clearly illuminates the path that everyone should walk, so that it is not reversed; it makes all the lotus ponds

And, just as the light of fireflies and other insects is unbearable and abandoned. Similarly, this treatise also clearly shows the key points of knowledge, therefore it is very proficient in distinguishing between right and wrong paths. With the blazing light that reveals the Middle Way, abandoning permanence and annihilation, it burns the dense web of wrong views that fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation, obscuring the view of reality. Moreover, the master Dharmakirti, who was personally received and blessed by the noble Manjushri himself, reveals the true and infallible reasoning to the disciples as it is. Also, because the wise ones who possess the pure eye of wisdom can make the lotus of wisdom filled with the honey of good words bloom. Although it possesses the merits mentioned above and the immeasurable merits represented by hundreds of other merits, this light of reason is unbearable for those who are particularly attached to the darkness of extreme views of permanence and annihilation, so it is like the daylight of evil wisdom, and is abandoned far away by those who fear the Middle Way. In the Pramāṇavārttika, the good explanation of the meaning of the words that are directly shown in the verses made for the sake of others, that is, the fourth chapter. The verses of Pramāṇavārttika, written by Master Dharmakirti, are completely finished. The many explanations of the commentators of the past, even if they can satisfy the ignorant who follow the words, but because they become obstacles to determining the essential meaning of the treatise, therefore, irrelevant explanations are not elaborated here. For the sake of those who are weak in wisdom and diligence, so that they can easily understand the intentions of other schools, this commentary, which is concise, clear and unmistakable, is made like a wish-fulfilling jewel. For the wise who desire to change, possess wisdom, and seek meaning, this milk of good words is like the essence of ghee of reason. Like clouds in the perfect season, it bestows benefits at will. This commentary is the pure wish-fulfilling jewel of reason. May all beings, through the virtue arising from this, be able to thoroughly understand the reality of the three places of knowledge, may the thick obscuration of the darkness of ignorance be completely cleared away, and may they attain the state of omniscient king!

This treatise, entitled "Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition: The Wish-Fulfilling Cow of Reasoning," was completed at the glorious Great Sakya Monastery by the virtuous Shakya monk, Zhonnu Lodro, who possesses the wisdom and confidence to properly distinguish the meaning of all the Sugata's teachings without relying on others. May it benefit the teachings and sentient beings! May there be auspiciousness! Colophon.
