Showing the characteristics of phenomena such as form. Showing the characteristics of phenomena such as form. What are the characteristics of phenomena such as form? Explaining for the sake of extensive demonstration: Form is characterized by being able to be formed. Feeling is characterized by experiencing. Perception is the grasping of characteristics. Formation is manifest formation. Consciousness is the individual knowing of objects. Consciousness is its own characteristic. Aggregates are the self-characteristic of suffering. The nature of the realms is like the desire of a venomous snake. Form is form, and when they come into contact with each other, they are characterized by being able to be formed because they can cause change. Feeling is characterized by experiencing the ripening of virtue and vice, such as joy and sorrow. Perception is characterized by grasping the unique characteristics of phenomena. Formation is characterized by the mind manifestly forming towards an object. Consciousness is characterized by individually knowing objects such as form. The aggregates of clinging are characterized by any of the three sufferings. The realms are characterized by the nature of a venomous snake in terms of holding in accordance with the Dharma. Or, it is because it has become the source of suffering. The sense bases are said by the Buddha to be the gate of birth. If it becomes the gate of the arising of mind or the arising of suffering. What is dependent origination? It is the characteristic of aggregation. Dependent origination arises from the aggregation of causes and conditions, so it is the characteristic of aggregation. Giving is the perfection of generosity, discipline is the characteristic of non-affliction, patience is the characteristic of non-anger, and diligence is the characteristic of being without fault. Giving has the nature of giving up body and possessions, discipline is the absence of suffering from afflictions, patience is the absence of anger with unfavorable things, and diligence has the nature of fully upholding virtuous Dharma, so it is the nature of being without fault. Meditation is the characteristic of gathering. That is because it gathers virtuous Dharma, or because the mind closely gathers towards the object. Wisdom is the characteristic of non-attachment. Because one goes to Nirvana, there is no attachment to anything.

It is for this reason. The characteristics of the six perfections (six pāramitās) are said to be these. Dhyānas, immeasurables, and likewise other formless ones, these are said by the one who knows them as they are, to be of the nature of non-confusion. Those dhyānas and so on are said by the Bhagavan to be of the nature of non-confusion, because they are obtained by being free from attachment to desire and abandoning anger. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are of the nature of definitely emerging. The thirty-seven dharmas of the factors of enlightenment are the cause of transcending samsara, therefore they are of the nature of definitely emerging. The characteristic of emptiness is: without an object, it is devoid of conceptualization. Since objects are not observed, the gate of liberation, emptiness, is not defiled by the stain of conceptualization, and is of the nature of being devoid of conceptualization. The peaceful nature of the signless, the characteristic of the third is the absence of suffering and ignorance. The gate of liberation, the signless, is of the nature of peace from the perspective of not observing signs. The third gate of liberation, the wishless, is of the nature of the absence of suffering and ignorance, because when one truly observes the aggregates that are of the nature of suffering, and when one observes the nature of the aggregates with wisdom, one does not wish for them. Among these, the two aspects of selflessness are the aspects of emptiness. Because the signs of elaboration such as form are pacified, nirvana is the aspect of the signless. The dharmas that are included in the two, suffering and origin, and that are associated with defilements, are the aspects of the wishless. The worldly samādhi that focuses on them is called the samādhi of emptiness and so on. The supramundane wisdom that focuses on them is called the gate of liberation, emptiness and so on. The characteristic of liberation is that which liberates. A form possessor looking at form is the first liberation. A formless one looking at form is the second liberation. The beautiful liberation is the third liberation. The four formless liberations, and the liberation of the cessation of perception and feeling, these eight liberate from the obscurations of absorption.
