Irreversible. In this, permanence and so on do not exist, neither is it the same nor different. This self is merely imputed in dependence, because it is not inherently existent, so it is not the stable thing that arose in previous past lives. As stated in the scripture: 'It has arisen in the past,' this statement is unreasonable. What arose in previous lives is not that same thing. If one thinks that that is the self, then what is taken will become different. Apart from what is taken, what is your self? It is also not an unstable thing that arises from what has not arisen before. As stated in the scripture: 'It does not arise from what has not arisen, otherwise this would be a fault. The self will become made, or arising will become without cause.' As it is said. It is also not birth and death, as it is said: 'What is taken is not the self, it is arising and ceasing. How can what is taken become the taker?' As it is said. In this, permanence and impermanence and so on do not exist, as it is said: 'The four, permanence and impermanence and so on, where are they in peace? The four, finite and infinite and so on, where are they in peace?' Whoever holds that the Thus-Gone One exists, held by dense clinging, he will imagine that there is no Nirvana. For the emptiness of inherent nature, after the Buddha's Nirvana, thinking of existence or non-existence is not reasonable.' As it is said. This self does not exist in the aggregates, neither is it the same as the aggregates nor different from the aggregates. As it is said: 'If the aggregates are the self, they will become things of birth and death. If it is different from the aggregates, it will become without the nature of the aggregates.' As it is said. If one seeks with the sevenfold analysis, then this self does not abide in any extreme such as permanence and impermanence. If this self is not inherently existent, then from what cause does it arise? For whom, beings constantly give rise to the thought of self-grasping, and on whatever is there, the grasping of 'I am' arises, this self arises from the unexamined conventional ignorance. If one seeks completely, then those non-Buddhists who are different from this Dharma will clearly cling to being different from the aggregates, while their own schools will cling to the nature of the aggregates.

Those who cling to what is inexpressible as either "is" or "is not," and who understand the non-inverted meaning taught by the Sugata, realizing that the aggregates are merely imputed in dependence and do not exist by their own nature, and who thus attain liberation many times, that is the "self." For those beings, such as humans, pretas, and animals, all beings connected with ignorance, a strong sense of self-grasping constantly arises, and they try to control that "self." Or, in whatever is the basis of imputation, such as the internal sense bases like the eye, and external objects like forms, the "self" in which the thought of grasping "I" arises is merely unexamined, following only worldly conventions, and arises from the power of delusion, not established by its own nature. Because this "self" does not exist by its own nature, but is merely imputed by delusion, therefore yogis do not observe the "self." Because they do not observe the "self," the "mine" that depends on it is also not observed. Therefore, they will be liberated from samsara. As it is said: When the thought of self and mine ceases in internal and external phenomena, grasping ceases, and when that ceases, birth also ceases. If there is no self, how can there be "mine"? Because there is no agent, there is no arising; therefore, because there is no self, there is no "mine." Therefore, by viewing the emptiness of self and mine, the yogi will be liberated. Just as there is no pot without a potter, there is no action without an agent, because the agent is imputed as the object to which the action is directed, which is "action." Therefore, because there is no "self" as the agent, there is no "mine" as the action, so the yogi who views the aggregates as empty—without self and mine—will be liberated. Secondly, this also illustrates other things, that the imputation of "self" and its grasping, etc., is like the way of analyzing a chariot, so too are other things. To illustrate this: Pots, cloths, ropes, armies, garlands, forests, and things like carts, dust motes, and houses, should be understood as they are imputed in this way.

Things like wool and coarse cloth do not exist when analyzed with seven aspects like a chariot. Apart from that, just as worldly beings name and establish conventions based on things like cotton threads and their own parts, so should it be understood. Why is that? Because the capable one does not dispute with the world. As it says in the scripture: 'The world disputes with me, but I do not dispute with the world.' Therefore, the capable one does not dispute or deny worldly conventions, but accepts the conventions as they are known in the world. So, how does the world establish conventions through which things? Like qualities, parts, desire, characteristics, trees, etc., and those with qualities, bodies, attachments and bases, entities, fire, etc. If analyzed with seven aspects like a chariot, they do not exist, but apart from that, they exist in the world. For example, the blue color of a pot and a rainbow are qualities and those with qualities; a pot and shape are parts and those with parts; a pot and a bulging belly and a small base are characteristics and entities; being particularly attached to beautiful and pleasing objects, and its basis is desire and attachment; firewood and fire are things to be burned and things that burn, etc. If analyzed with seven aspects like a chariot, they cannot be found, but if not analyzed in that way, but through worldly convention, these conventions exist.
