Showing the Person as Dependent Arising. Showing the Person as Dependent Arising. Thus, having refuted the substantially existent self, there are two ways to show the person as dependent arising: through the actual thing and through its example. The first is: If the person is refuted by various kinds of reasoning, is what is called a person something that does not exist in any way? Answer: Here, it is established by relying on the aggregates. Just as "this arises because of this," in order to not interrupt the establishment of this conventional truth, it should be acknowledged that it does not arise from causelessness, etc. Similarly, here too, having completely eliminated the substantially existent person who possesses the faults mentioned above, in order to make the worldly term called person, which is imputed in dependence on the aggregates, truly exist, it should be acknowledged that there is an imputation of self or person, because it is seen that there is imputation. The second is to establish it through an example, there are two: the example thing and showing the meaning it represents. The first is: Briefly stated, in order to establish the meaning that the self is only an imputation, in order to clarify the meaning mentioned above, showing the external example: The chariot is not other than its own parts, Not other, not not, not possessing them either, The parts are not in it, nor are the parts there, Not just an assemblage, not a shape, as before. This chariot is not other than its own parts, such as rivets and wheels, because it is not seen separately from them. It is not other or not other, because there is no chariot on each of those parts. It is also not possessing those parts, because there is no meaning of possessing since they are not different from it. The chariot also does not rely on the parts, and the parts do not rely on the chariot, because there is no otherness. The second is explained in detail, there are two: refuting the aspect of assemblage, refuting the aspect of shape. The first is: If just an assemblage becomes a chariot, Then even when scattered, there should be a chariot. If just the assemblage of parts is a chariot, then the assemblage is not other than just the assemblage, therefore even when the parts such as rivets are scattered, there should be a chariot. Furthermore, Because there is no possessor of parts, there are no parts, it is said. Because there is no possessor of parts, it is said that there are no parts.

If there is no whole with parts, then the individual parts do not exist either, because they are established in dependence on each other. Moreover, you have already admitted that there is no whole with parts. Therefore, which collection of parts will become a chariot? Second, refuting the aspect of shape: Shape alone is also not a chariot. It is said, the word "also" indicates that not only is the collection of parts not a chariot, but also if there is no whole with parts, the individual parts do not exist, so the mere shape of the collection of parts is also not a chariot. Furthermore, if shape alone is a chariot, then is it the shape of the individual parts, or the shape of the collection? If it is the former, then is it those parts that have not changed their previous shape, or those that have changed their previous shape? If, in that case, the first is accepted, it is not reasonable, as it is said: If the shape of the parts is as it was before, it is the same when it belongs to the chariot. How are those when they are separated? Now also there will be no chariot. If the shape of the parts of the chariot, such as the wheel, etc., is as it was before it was assembled into a chariot, then if the shape is the same when it belongs to the chariot, then just as those parts do not exist when they are separated, so also now, when assembled into a chariot, there will be no chariot, because there is no difference in the shape of the wheel, etc., when the chariot is assembled and when it is not assembled. If the second alternative is accepted, that only the shape that is different from the previous state is called a chariot, then that is also not reasonable, as it is said: If at the time of the chariot there is a difference in the shape of the parts from before, if it can be grasped, then because of that, the shape of the parts is not the chariot itself. If, when assembled with the chariot, the difference in the shape of its parts, such as the wheel, the axle, and the rivets, etc., are each flat, long, round, etc., whatever difference in shape there is from what existed when the chariot was not assembled, if a different shape can be grasped, then for the wheel, which has a shape distinguished by spokes, rims, and hubs, etc., in the state of the chariot, its own shape has changed, and it cannot be grasped, and that
