Just as it is said in the scripture, "Know the dharmas like trees." Furthermore, although form and so on do not arise in reality, they are not incapable of becoming objects of worldly perception in conventional terms, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, if things do not exist in reality, then in conventional terms they are like the son of a barren woman. This statement is uncertain for you yourself. Thus, the first two verses show the uncertainty through the example known to oneself, and the last shows the uncertainty through scripture. Therefore, for the Madhyamikas, there is only refutation and examination through the means described above. For example, we acknowledge that form and so on arise by their own nature in conventional truth, but we do not deny it in ultimate truth. So, what is it? Like the son of a barren woman, who does not exist in his own essence in either reality or the world, similarly, all these things, such as form, do not arise by their own essence in either worldly convention or reality. 'Arising by its own essence' means arising by its own characteristics, without depending on the mind. Because it is so, therefore the Teacher proclaimed: All dharmas are from the beginning peaceful, unborn, and by nature in complete nirvana; therefore, there is never any birth. As it is said in the sutra: When the wheel of Dharma was turned, the dharmas that are peaceful from the beginning, unborn, and by nature in nirvana, were taught by you, the Protector. Therefore, there is never any birth for all things. In this context, because wisdom is the realm of peace, the dharmas are peaceful. Why is that? Because they are not born from their own essence. The reason for that is because they are by nature in nirvana. 'From the beginning' means that they are not unborn only in the state of the yogi's wisdom.

Ki. Even in the state of worldly conventions before that, it means that all phenomena are not inherently produced. Thus, at the time of turning the wheel of Dharma, the Bodhisattva Sarvanivaranaviskambhin praises the Bhagavan by saying that you have taught all phenomena through the gate of expressing excellent qualities. Furthermore, the Sautrantika school and the Vaibhashika school, etc., of one's own school argue that if things do not exist ultimately, then they do not exist conventionally either, and should not be debated and examined, because there is a famous example in one's own tenets. Like this: These pots and so on do not exist in themselves, just as they are widely known in the world. Similarly, since all things change, they will not become the fault of being the same as the son of a barren woman. According to your own view, pots and forests, etc., are merely imputed, so they do not exist in reality, and just as they are widely known in the world, all things such as form will also change in the same way, so if they do not exist ultimately, then conventionally they will not become the same as the son of a barren woman, and become completely non-existent. If the basis for imputing a pot, such as water, exists as a substance, then it is reasonable to impute it as a pot. According to whose view is it that all dharmas are merely imputed, therefore, since there is no basis for imputation, how will it not become a fault like the son of a barren woman? That is also unreasonable, because it is impossible to establish that the basis of imputation, etc., is real. Like this: Apart from form, etc., how can there be a pot? Similarly, apart from wind, etc., form does not exist either. And, similarly: Earth, water, fire, and wind, each has no self-nature. Without three, there is no one, and without one, there are no three. If there are no three, there is no one, and if there is no one, there are no three. Each is not self-existent, how can conditioned phenomena arise? As it is said, and so on. Therefore, for example, relying on the imputed existence of the collection of mirrors and faces, etc., one perceives the imputed image, and relying on pillars, etc., one imputes a house, and similarly, one imputes a forest that has trees as its basis.

And, just as in a dream, one perceives a sprout of unoriginated nature arising from a seed of unoriginated nature, so too, the imputation of all imputed things is reasonably dependent on that which is imputed. As it is said in the treatise: 'Just as the emanation of the Teacher is an emanation complete with miraculous powers,' and so on, 'like a city of gandharvas, like a mirage, like a dream.' Refutation of the assertion of causelessness.
