Because conditioned phenomena are impermanent. If one wishes to avoid that fault and asserts that the defining characteristic and the defined are one, then at that time, the nature of the three defining characteristics and the defined, all four, is not clearly present, so it will become non-existent, because it is one with the defined. The defining characteristic will not become the defining characteristic, and because it is one with the defining characteristic, the defined will not become the defined. Therefore, all four are non-existent, or because there is no nature, one should not assert it as that and other. Fourth, examining the existence or non-existence of things and refuting: Production and so on exist, because they have causes. Here, the wise call the arising of sprouts and so on, relying on the aggregation of causes and conditions, "production." If the production of something from something exists, then production and so on will become existent. But existence is unreasonable, for example, the nature of a sprout, which has already been established as a thing, does not arise from a seed that has already been established as a thing, because the unchanged seed has no function of producing a sprout, and it is also unreasonable for a sprout that has already been established to arise again. A fruit that has become a thing does not arise from a cause that is not a thing, because a non-thing has no ability to produce a fruit, and what has already been produced does not arise again. A fruit that is not a thing does not arise from a cause that is not a thing, because a non-thing has no ability, and a non-thing does not arise like the son of a barren woman. A fruit that is not a thing does not arise from a cause that has already been established as a thing, because the faults that have already been mentioned will fall upon it. Therefore, production is impossible, so the aggregation of causes and conditions is meaningless. From this, the defining characteristic is also not existent, because production and destruction are unreasonable. Here, are production and destruction the nature of things? Or are they the nature of non-things? Think about this. Among them, for the time being, the own nature of a thing has already been established, and it will not become a thing again, that is, arise, because it is meaningless for an existent thing to arise. A non-thing is not existent, so it will not become a thing, that is, arise, like the son of a barren woman.

Because there would be the fault of arising. Since things and non-things cannot arise, there is no arising. Similarly, there is no destruction either. Like this, non-things are destroyed, but do not become non-things, because for things that do not exist, like the son of a barren woman, there is no destruction. For things, they also do not become non-things, because they are mutually contradictory. Third, refuting the nature of being in the process of arising. It is divided into two parts: the actual refutation and the summary of the meaning. The first part has four points. The first point is to refute that which is half-arisen and half-unarisen is in the process of arising. It is divided into two parts: refuting the essence and refuting the proof. The first part is: Here it is said that things and non-things do not arise, but the meaning of being in the process of arising arises. If it is said like that, then what is called being in the process of arising refers to that which is half-arisen and half-unarisen. Therefore, being in the process of arising does not exist, because there is no third form other than that which has arisen and that which has not arisen. Therefore, the being in the process of arising of non-existence will not become arising. If it is thought that what has arisen and what has not arisen are in the process of arising, then in that case, all three times would become being in the process of arising, because what has arisen and what has not arisen are in the process of arising, and the three times also belong to the category of these two. The past and the present are what has already obtained the action of arising, so they have arisen, and the future is what has not arisen. Furthermore, if this being in the process of arising is thought about, is it to be thought of as the self of being in the process of arising, or is it to be thought of as something that is not the self of being in the process of arising? Neither of the two is reasonable, because as the self of being in the process of arising, because it exists as its self, it will not become being in the process of arising again, and as the self that is not being in the process of arising, it will also not become being in the process of arising, because they are mutually contradictory. Therefore, there is no being in the process of arising. The second point is: If being in the process of arising exists, it is because it exists between the past and the future. If it does not exist, then relying on what does it become the past and the future? If it exists, then what has not reached there is the future, and what has passed beyond it is the past. If it is said like that, then in which proponent's system is it impossible for the past and the future to exist without an interval between them, then for that system, there is no being in the process of arising, because for being in the process of arising
