It is unreasonable to say that there is birth before the birth-giver, because there is no basis. It is also unreasonable afterwards, because the unborn does not exist, and later birth is meaningless. It is impossible to say that they exist simultaneously, because then the two would become independent of each other. Because of what reason is that so, therefore birth and the birth-giver do not occur simultaneously on the pot, and since simultaneous birth does not exist, it is unreasonable to say that the pot is born. Secondly, someone says: the pot has birth, because it has the nature of destruction, it is old. That is also unreasonable. If there is something called old, then does it exist on something born earlier or later? For it, the thing of the pot born earlier will not become old, because it was born earlier, so it is called new. Also, what is born completely later will not become old, because in the state of being born later, it is also new. Therefore, since there is no old, the birth represented by it is impossible. Fifth, the refutation of examining the three times is: From this also there is no birth, because there is no birth in the three times. Thus, the present thing does not arise from the present itself, because cause and effect are not simultaneous. It also does not arise from the future, because it does not exist. Nor does it arise from the past, because it has ceased and does not exist. Therefore, there is no birth by nature. Secondly, showing the result of negating birth is: Furthermore, if things have self-nature, because self-nature does not change, there is no arising from what has not arisen, so from where does birth have to come? Since there is no disappearance after arising, then where does it have to go when it ceases? This is impossible, the Bhagavan said: Monks, the eye does not come from anywhere in birth, nor does it go anywhere in cessation. Therefore, if that is the case, for anything that is born, there is no coming from the future to the present, and for anything that ceases, there is no going from the present to the past, therefore there is no self-nature. If it is like that, there is no self-nature, then how

Just like that, the inner and outer phenomena of the world are not like illusions. The master, relying on the wisdom of the noble ones, proclaimed the fruit of discernment. Therefore, the noble ones see the phenomena of the world as illusory and meaningless. For those who see the cycle of existence as meaningless, all attachments are completely extinguished, and they attain liberation. There is nothing unreasonable in this. Because they do not deny dependent origination, all phenomena of the world are not destroyed, and they comprehend reality as it is, thus achieving liberation. Second, the teaching on the emptiness of inherent existence has four points. First, examining sequential and simultaneous occurrence and refuting them: The characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising, abiding, and ceasing, are mutually contradictory. Therefore, they cannot occur simultaneously, nor can they occur sequentially, because there is no instance of two occurring together or one occurring alone. Since there is no cause for establishment other than sequential and simultaneous occurrence, when could they possibly arise? Thus it is said. Second, refuting the fault of characteristics being endless: All characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising, belong to the category of conditioned phenomena, and therefore are acknowledged as conditioned. Therefore, for them, all characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising, will occur again. Arising will have another arising, and just as arising has another arising, so too, like arising, cessation will have another cessation, and abiding, like cessation, will have another abiding. Those too are conditioned phenomena, and therefore require other characteristics. For those, there are others, and for those others, there are still others, and so on endlessly. If it is endless, then all things cannot be established, therefore the characteristics of conditioned phenomena are empty of inherent existence. Third, examining one and different and refuting them: Are these characteristics different from or not different from the basis of characteristics? If, for the moment, it is asserted that the characteristics are different from the basis of characteristics, then how can the basis of characteristics, conditioned phenomena, have impermanence, just as heat and cold, pleasure and pain, are mutually exclusive because they are different? If there is no impermanence, then it also
