Commentary on Chapter Fifteen Commentary on Chapter Fifteen Second, regarding the refutation of the nature of inherent existence, etc., it is established in the manner of unborn illusion, showing that inherent nature is empty, preventing the nature of what is being born, and showing the conclusion of that prevention, there are four points. The first is to prevent birth, and to show the result of the prevention, there are two points. The first point has five parts, first examining and refuting the aspects of existence and non-existence: Here it is said that conditioned phenomena exist by their own nature, because their characteristics such as birth exist. If you say that if nature exists, then conditioned phenomena should exist, but they do not. Why? Because birth, when producing conditioned phenomena, does it produce something that exists or does not exist? To this, let us temporarily follow the view that the result does not exist, in the state of the seed, the sprout does not exist, so at the last moment of the seed when the causes and conditions gather, the sprout arises. Therefore, if it is said that at the last moment of the seed, the non-existent sprout arises, that is also unreasonable, because then the horns of a donkey, etc., should also appear. Therefore, how can something that does not exist arise? It is impossible for something that does not exist to arise. If, fearing that fault, those who say that the result exists say that what exists arises, then the sprout that already existed before the seed has already been produced from the beginning, so it is unreasonable to produce it again, because one's own essence has already been established, so production is superfluous. If what exists arises, then it will never not arise, so production will be endless. That is also impossible, therefore, how can what exists arise? It is impossible for what exists to arise. Furthermore, the result, the sprout that is being born, destroys the cause, the so-called seed, because if the seed does not perish, the sprout will not arise. Therefore, the non-existent sprout will not arise, because what does not exist has no power to destroy the seed. Therefore, what does not exist does not arise. For the sprout that has already been established, there is no reason to establish it again, therefore what exists does not arise either. Because the time of birth is impossible, there is also no birth. For example, when the sprout's own essence is established, birth does not exist, because it is an essence that has already been established. When it is not established outside of what is established, birth does not exist.

The unestablished does not allow the act of arising because it has no basis. At the time when it is slightly established, and at the time when another is slightly unestablished and being established, it does not arise because it becomes a fault of speaking to both. When it is impossible for all three aspects to arise at any time, then when will there be arising? Here it is said that milk becomes the object of yogurt, so it is arising. That is also unreasonable. For the milk that temporarily abides in the object of milk, there is no arising in its own nature, because the nature of milk is there. Therefore, just as milk does not arise in its own object, so also for other yogurt objects, milk does not arise from it, because if examined, there cannot be a yogurt object in milk. Second, refuting by examining the beginning, middle, and end: From this, conditioned phenomena do not arise. Thus, the initial arising, the intermediate abiding, and the final destruction do not exist before arising, so there are no conditioned phenomena before arising. If it is thought that it arises at the time of arising, abides at the time of abiding, and is destroyed at the time of destruction, that is also unreasonable. Thus, these three are only different times, because the other two do not exist at each time. Therefore, how can each of the arising, etc., be created when the two characteristics of abiding and destruction, etc., do not exist? Even if each characteristic does not exist, conditioned phenomena themselves do not exist. Third, refuting by examining both self and other: From this, conditioned phenomena do not arise. Because the pot is not established by its own nature, because it depends on clay. Clay is not established by its own nature, because it depends on clods. Therefore, without the other object clay, the pot's own object will not arise, and clay does not have its own nature, so it will not become other by depending on the pot. Therefore, the pot does not arise from both self and other, because self and other are not established. Fourth, refuting by examining sequentially and simultaneously. Divided into two: things and refuting the proof of arising. First: Furthermore, is this arising considered before, after, or simultaneously with the producer?
