Commentary on Chapter Eleven Commentary on Chapter Eleven Sixth, refuting the permanence of time. It is divided into stating the prior view and refuting it. The first part is: The proponents of time say that those who say, "I have no permanence," do not mean that there are no permanent things in all cases, because there is time. Here, although the elements such as earth and seeds exist, the arising and ceasing of fruits, sprouts, and flowers occur because time is not permanent, and sometimes it exists. From this, it is inferred that time exists, and it is manifested by moments, instants, and brief periods, and it is different from the things that exist in the three times, and it is permanent. The second part is: Refuting the nature of time, divided into refuting its proof and refuting it itself. The first part is divided into refuting the past and future, and refuting the present. The first part is further divided into refuting the future as an existent entity, refuting the past as an existent entity, and specifically refuting the future in three ways. The first is: If time exists as a distinct entity, it must be cognized, but it is not cognized, and it has already been refuted. It cannot be established by its own nature, but must be established through the distinctions of things such as vases that exist in the three times. Therefore, time should be refuted by refuting these things. For this purpose, a future vase is posited to represent future time, and past and present vases are posited to represent past and present time. The future is what has not yet arrived at the present time. The past is what has passed from the present. The present is what is happening but has not yet ceased. These three times exist in dependence on each other, because without any two, a single one cannot exist. The future cannot be established without depending on the past and present, because the future is from the future, and therefore the future must inevitably become past and present. The determination of the other two times should also be understood in the same way. Therefore, the future vase does not have a present vase, nor does it have a past vase, because they are different in nature from the future, and one cannot exist in the other. Because the future vase has the past and present

Because there are not two, therefore the past and present are both made future by the future, and those two also become future. When the past and present are both future, then all three times are future, so the past and present do not exist. Thus, where is the future established by the future? Therefore, the future time does not exist by its own nature. If you say that the past pot is not completely absent in the future pot, but exists in the future as the nature of the future, so there is no fault as mentioned above. If destruction exists in the future as the nature of the past and future, then what is the past pot that exists as the nature of the future? How can it become past? Because it exists in the future. Furthermore, does your future exist or not? If you establish that it exists because it exists as the self of the future, then the future itself is impossible, because the future object dwells in the self of the future, so it will become present. If you say that although it exists in the self of the future, it does not exist in the nature of the present, so it will not become present. Whatever exists in its own nature is the present, just as blue exists in the nature of blue, it is the present. The future will also become the present because it exists in the nature of the future. Therefore, because the future does not exist, the other two times that depend on it do not exist either. The Vaibhashikas believe that things that are established by their own characteristics still exist in the future, and in the past they also exist without losing their own nature, and they also exist in the present. According to their view, what things do not exist? Impermanence does not exist. In this way, according to whose doctrine all three times exist, according to his doctrine, how can impermanence exist? Because in the nature of any object, what appears to the mind now also exists in the past and future without losing its own nature. If this is the case, it will contradict the Buddha's words: Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they are destroyed, and their quick cessation is bliss.
