Whatever distinctions are made regarding giving and receiving, etc., the term "dharma" is applied accordingly. The reason why a certain way of acting is called "dharma" is because it is a certain way of acting. And this way of acting also changes according to the differences of place and time, therefore, practitioners also appear like powerful worldly people. Therefore, worldly customs are also not fixed. Third, refutation of accumulating karma for the sake of sense objects: If there is no pleasing object, there will be no experience of happiness. And pleasing objects can only be obtained through virtuous deeds, therefore, in order to obtain sense objects, one should do virtuous deeds. Even if beautiful forms, sounds, etc., can be obtained through virtuous deeds, these objects are considered bad and depreciated by those who desire liberation. Because they are the root of unreal things, and because impermanence, suffering, etc., themselves constantly "kill" you, and because they generate afflictions such as desire, they are the place of carelessness. Therefore, for those who desire liberation, what accomplishment is needed if giving up certain things brings auspiciousness and good results? Nothing is needed. Fourth, refutation of accumulating karma for the sake of power: Even if sense objects are bad, therefore there is no need to practice dharma for their sake, but kingship brings great happiness because one can taste the flavor of command, therefore one should practice dharma for the sake of kingship. If one cannot accomplish what one desires without command, then one will seek command. But for yogis who can control their own minds, everything they need is accomplished effortlessly, therefore there is no need for command, then practicing dharma for the sake of command becomes meaningless. So, for those who need command, is it necessary to practice dharma for the sake of command? Anyone who seeks command merely to rule through words is called a fool among people, because they pursue the root of great meaningless things—kingship. Wise people do not think that what is obtained through external distracting activities is happiness. Fifth, refutation of accumulating karma for the sake of future fruits: Even if one does virtuous deeds in order to obtain fruits such as wealth in future lives.

Seeing that abundant fruits will arise in the future, etc., because of craving for Dharma such as generosity, if you want to eliminate craving, then the result of craving, the lower realms, is undesirable. Therefore, seeing that all the future results of craving are only the lower realms, are you not afraid? What is the use of craving for Dharma? Therefore, just as one dislikes the results of the lower realms, one should also abandon craving for Dharma. Furthermore, just as a hired worker works for the sake of fruit, meritorious deeds such as generosity performed for the sake of fruit will in every way become like a bribe, so the wise should not perform meritorious deeds for the sake of desirable fruit. Secondly, one should not doubt that by preventing meritorious deeds, one will engage in non-meritorious deeds, because those wise people who see samsara as a cause and do not desire virtue, how could they commit non-virtuous deeds that are the cause of meaninglessness for themselves and others? This is impossible. Thirdly, children who are connected with ignorance accumulate meritorious and non-meritorious deeds, and through experiencing the results of happiness and suffering, they revolve in samsara. But those wise people who have uprooted the imprints of ignorance and see dependent origination as without inherent existence, they see external and internal sentient beings as like a collection of illusory wheels appearing as male and female forms made of thread and wood, and like illusory beings born from mantras and substances, they see them as without inherent existence. Therefore, those who have abandoned meritorious and non-meritorious deeds transcend samsara and go most clearly to the supreme state, that is, nirvana. Therefore, for those wise people who are skilled in the nature of Dharma like illusion, who have no joy in samsara, and who have no manifest joy even in agreeable objects that are in accordance with it, it is not appropriate to be joyful in any way here for the turbulent appearances such as birth, old age, sickness, and death, which are different from that. Even so, the great Bodhisattvas who abide on the bhumis revolve in samsara so that sentient beings may understand the nature of samsara, and they are not stained by the defilements of faults. From the Four Hundred Verses on Yoga Practice, the teaching on the means of abandoning attachment to the enjoyment of desirable objects for oneself is completed.
