If it will perish, why destroy body and mind by striving for action for the sake of that meaningless fruit? Therefore, one should strive to abandon action. Furthermore, like the fruit, action is also certain to perish. For example, actions such as building a castle are done with great effort and many methods. Having finished, one sees it perish without effort. Even so, you act for those actions. To have no attachment or detachment to action at all shows oneself to be foolish. If it is said that even though action perishes without effort, attachment and detachment will not change because it is the cause of happiness, then there is no happiness in the past consciousness because it has ceased. There is also no happiness in the future because it has not yet arisen. There is also no happiness in what is happening now because it perishes in an instant and does not remain because of its very passing. Therefore, for what fruit is this labor of action, etc., the cause of happiness for you who crave happiness? One should think that it is like building a house on the bank of a river, there is no fruit. Second, refuting meritorious actions. Refuting non-meritorious actions, there are two. The first has five parts. First, refuting the accumulation of actions for the sake of higher realms. If it is said that one must unhesitatingly perform virtuous actions for the sake of the happiness of higher realms, then for those wise people who see the truth, the higher realms, including the desire gods, will also cause fear like hell, because it is the door to the birth of various kinds of arrogance and carelessness, and because it is the burning of the fire of intense afflictions arising from desirable objects, and because ignorance is predominant. Therefore, for those wise people who do not rejoice even in the happiness of higher realms, it is rare for any existence not to cause fear in any way, therefore higher realms should also be abandoned. Furthermore, just as the noble ones who are skilled in individually contemplating the faults of samsara see samsara completely surrounded by the burning fire of suffering, if foolish ordinary people were able to directly recognize the suffering of samsara in all ways, then in that instant, this person's mind, together with heart and body, would perish in a hundred ways. Because he has not realized it, this person is deceived by the flattery of friends.

Just as one would treat an enemy, one should show great joy in samsara. Furthermore, if it is said that those who possess lineage, wealth, and power in this samsara are happy, then if one examines them carefully, they are not places of happiness. For among sentient beings who possess lineage and wealth, etc., there are few who are not arrogant. And those who are arrogant always think of themselves as the best and cannot tolerate those who are equal to or superior to themselves, so they want to defeat them and become devoid of compassion. For those who want to defeat others and have no compassion, how can they truly attain the ultimate result of the lower realms? Therefore, the Blessed One said that those who go from light to light are very rare, because lineage and wealth give rise to arrogance, which inevitably leads to downfall. If it is said that arrogant people are condemned for doing evil, but those who are not arrogant perform virtuous deeds for the sake of heaven and should be praised, then those who vow to practice celibacy for the sake of heaven in the next life and become disgusted with objects of desire, it is said that after death they are reborn in heaven and see and experience the desired fruits of Dharma. In this way, having abandoned the object they have obtained, they seek it again, so the Dharma becomes inverted. What reason is there for the noble ones to consider this inverted Dharma to be correct? Therefore, one should not be attached to it. In this way, since the Dharma is inverted, it should be abandoned, and one should not be attached to its fruits either. For the fruits of meritorious deeds such as generosity are wealth and great possessions, but these must be protected from kings, thieves, fire, water, and other enemies. Since one must constantly strive to protect them from others, how can they become beneficial to the self who is autonomous? Therefore, the fruits cannot bring benefit either. Second, refuting attachment to worldly customs. If it is said that Dharma such as generosity is inverted, then one should follow the customs that are prevalent in the world, but these are not constant either, so one should not rely on them. For example, worldly customs,
