It is not, because affliction itself is not the afflicted, because it would be the fault of the agent and the action being one. Moreover, it is not, because it would be the fault of being without dependence. Therefore, there is no mutual dependence and support. Afflictions do not possess the afflicted. Third, refuting the cause, there are two types: general refutation and separate analysis refutation. The first type has two aspects: refutation of the entity and refutation of the object. The first is: If you refute the afflictions, even so, the causes of afflictions, the pleasing and unpleasing, and the perverted, are temporarily existent. Because they exist, the afflictions also exist, if you think like this: Pleasing and unpleasing, and the perverted, From their own nature, they do not exist. Pleasing and unpleasing, and the perverted, What afflictions arise in dependence? Pleasing and unpleasing, and the perverted, are not existent from their own nature, because they are interdependent, and because the refutation will be explained. When those are not existent by their own nature, what afflictions arise in dependence on the pleasing and unpleasing, and the perverted? Because there are no causes of those, the pleasing and unpleasing, and the perverted, therefore, afflictions are not existent by their own nature, think like this. The second is: Afflictions exist, because their objects, forms, sounds, etc., the six objects, exist, if you think like this: Forms, sounds, tastes, and touches, And smells and dharmas, these six, Are the basis of attachment, hatred, and, Ignorance, it is considered. The six objects from form to dharma are the basis, that is, the object, you consider. Because of what? It is of attachment, hatred, and ignorance. For those, on forms, etc., clinging to the aspect of the pleasing, attachment arises, clinging to the aspect of the unpleasing, hatred arises, clinging to the perverted aspects of permanence and self, etc., ignorance arises. Are these six objects the objects of afflictions, established in meaning? Forms, sounds, tastes, and touches, And smells and dharmas are merely, Like the non-existent hairs, etc., seen by those with cataracts, These forms, sounds, etc., Have become a nature of non-existence, You, for attachment, etc.

This is merely an examination of the object of those who refute, and it has no inherent nature, that is its meaning. If it has no inherent nature, then how does it become an object? It is like a city of gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. These six objects, like the city of gandharvas and so on, are merely objects established from perversion. When it is like that, like a magical person, like an image, how can suffering and non-suffering arise? This shows that the signs of suffering and non-suffering arising from a perverse basis are also false. As it is said in the scriptures: 'The aggregates arising from self-grasping, that self-grasping is actually false. With its false seed, how can there be a true birth?' It is said like that. Secondly, refuting separately, it is divided into refuting suffering and non-suffering, which are the causes of attachment and aversion, and refuting perversion, which is the cause of ignorance. The first is: Furthermore, through this reasoning, suffering and non-suffering are not inherently existent. Relying on what is called suffering, non-suffering, does not exist without relying on suffering, therefore suffering is not reasonable. If there is something called suffering, then it must depend on non-suffering. Relying on what non-suffering is called suffering, the non-suffering that is relied upon does not exist without relying on suffering, therefore the establishment of suffering as inherently existent is unreasonable. Just as suffering does not exist, non-suffering also does not exist. Relying on what is called non-suffering, suffering, does not exist without relying on non-suffering, therefore non-suffering is not reasonable. If there is something called non-suffering, because it depends on other related things, it must depend on suffering like long and short or this shore and the other shore. Relying on what suffering is established as non-suffering, the suffering that is relied upon does not exist without relying on non-suffering. Because of that, the suffering that is relied upon to establish non-suffering, there are no other related things, therefore the establishment of non-suffering as inherently existent is unreasonable. Because of that
