Explanation of Chapter Twenty-Three Explanation of Chapter Twenty-Three Chapter Twenty-Three, on examining perversions, refutes the establishment of the self-nature of afflictions, and refutes the abandonment of afflictions by means of antidotes to afflictions, divided into two parts. The first part is further divided into: refuting the nature of afflictions, refuting the basis, and refuting the cause. Now is the first part. Here it is said: The continuum of existence exists, because there are afflictions such as desire as its cause. Beings whose cause is karma and afflictions, passing from one death to another, this is the continuum of existence, and its main cause is afflictions, because those who have abandoned afflictions do not have these. If you say, if the cause—afflictions—exists, then the continuum of existence should also exist, then these afflictions are not truly existent, because: the definition of affliction is that by its arising, the continuum of sentient beings is not pacified. Attachment, hatred, and ignorance, it is said, arise from self-cause conceptual thought. With the pleasing as the object, the displeasing and the perverse, arise entirely relying on them. The Blessed One said: Desire, your root, know that it arises from conceptual thought. Because it is said thus, attachment, hatred, and ignorance arise from conceptual thought of the nature of improper attention, such as holding the impure as pure. These three, attachment, etc., arise entirely relying on the objects of the pleasing, the displeasing, and the perverse, respectively. For example, from the pleasing arises attachment, from the displeasing arises hatred, and from the perverse arises ignorance. Because the self-cause of the mind that grasps perversely is the condition of conceptual thought. Conceptual thought is the common cause of all three. Therefore, whatever arises relying on the pleasing, the displeasing, and the perverse, they are not self-existent, therefore afflictions are not truly existent. If afflictions such as attachment were self-established, then they should not depend on the pleasing, the displeasing, etc., but they do arise depending on the pleasing and the displeasing as well as the perverse. Therefore, these afflictions are without self-nature, not truly existent. Second, regarding

Regarding the two methods of refuting and refuting the afflicted mind, the first is: Furthermore, my existence and non-existence cannot be established in any way. If it does not exist, then how can the existence and non-existence of the afflictions be established? That my existence and non-existence cannot be established in any way has already been explained in detail. Therefore, if I (Sanskrit: ātman) do not exist, then how can the existence and non-existence of the dharmas that depend on it, namely the afflictions, be established? Just as there is no drawing that depends on it if there is no wall. Why is it that if I (Sanskrit: ātman) do not exist, the afflictions also do not exist? Whose are these afflictions? It also does not exist. If there is nothing, then these afflictions are not anyone's. These afflictions, like a drawing on a wall or a ripening fruit, depend on a basis. If this basis is examined, it is either I (Sanskrit: ātman) or the mind, but these have already been refuted, so the basis on which these afflictions depend does not exist. If there is no basis, then these afflictions are not anyone's basis. The second is: If the basis of the afflictions, namely the I (Sanskrit: ātman) that was previously established, does not exist at all, but the afflictions arise in dependence on the afflicted mind, and this mind also arises together with the afflictions, then this is also unreasonable. Just as when observing oneself, afflictions act as afflictions, therefore they are afflictions. By acting with afflictions on the afflicted one, therefore it does not exist in the afflicted one in five ways. Just as when observing oneself, the afflicted one does not exist in the afflictions in five ways. Just as when observing oneself, namely the five aggregates such as form, appearing as I (Sanskrit: ātman) and mine, if one searches for this I (Sanskrit: ātman) in five ways, it cannot be found, similarly, if one searches for afflictions in the afflicted one in five ways, it cannot be found. Just like this, the afflicted one itself is not the afflictions, because the burner and the burnt would become the same. Moreover, it is not other, because the afflictions do not arise from the cause of the afflicted one. Since it is neither the same nor other, then it is also unreasonable to be the basis and the dependent, and the aspects related to it. Just as when observing oneself, the afflicted one also exists in the afflictions in five ways
