If a non-existent thing could arise from a non-existent thing, then a daughter of a widow could also give birth to a child, but that is not the case. Because a non-existent thing is the nature contrary to an existent thing, it has no ability to produce results. If it did exist, then even Nirvana should be able to produce results. A non-existent thing also cannot arise from an existent thing, because a non-existent thing is contrary to an existent thing, so how could it arise from an existent thing? If it could arise, then even darkness should arise from a lamp. Because when analyzed and observed in this way, arising and ceasing do not exist, therefore, it should be known that this is seen by ignorance. Secondly, the individual refutation of arising is divided into three parts: the actual refutation, the fault of having things exist, and the refutation of that fault. The first part is: If some things exist, then they have arising and ceasing, so there will be arising and ceasing, but in reality, no things exist, like a rabbit's horn, because they are not inherently produced. Like this: Things do not arise from themselves, nor do they arise from others. They do not arise from both self and others. If they do not exist, how can they arise? Things do not arise from themselves, because it is meaningless and would lead to infinite faults. Nor do they arise from others, because it would lead to the fault of arising from all causes and non-causes. Nor do they arise from both self and others, because it would lead to both faults. If there is no arising in the way described above, then how can it arise? It is thought that it simply does not arise. The second part is: If one admits that things exist, then one will fall into the view of permanence or annihilation, because that thing must be either permanent or impermanent. If someone transcends the classification of things as described above and admits that things are inherently existent, then it is very contrary to the scriptures and will lead to the view of permanence or annihilation, because if that thing is examined, it must become either permanent or impermanent. If it is permanent, then one will become a proponent of permanence, and if it is impermanent, then one will fall into the fault of being a proponent of annihilation. The third part is divided into the actual refutation and the refutation of it.

Of the two. First: Although one asserts that things exist, they will not become annihilationist, nor will they become permanentist. Because the sequence of cause and effect arising and ceasing is existence (samsara). Although we assert that things exist by their own nature, we will not fall into the faults of annihilationism and permanentism. If the cause ceases and the effect, which is caused by that cause, does not arise, then it will become annihilation; if the cause does not cease and remains by its own nature, then it will become permanent. But this is not the case, because the sequence of the effects and causes of conditioned things arising and ceasing in order occurs without interruption, and that is existence or samsara. Second, divided into two. First, showing that one cannot avoid permanence and annihilation: If the sequence of cause and effect arising and ceasing is existence, then, because there is no arising when there is ceasing, the cause will be subject to annihilation. If the sequence of the arising of the effect and the ceasing of the cause is existence, then, because the moment of the cause's ceasing is connected to that which does not arise, the sequence will be subject to annihilation. Why? Does this fault not also befall you? This fault befalls those who assert that things exist. But we do not assert even a little bit of the self-nature of things, because all dharmas are unborn. Earlier it was said: That which arises in dependence, is temporarily neither the same nor different, therefore it is neither annihilation nor permanence. There, we also showed in this way that things have no self-nature. If it were not so, and things existed by their own nature, then how would seeds and sprouts not be other? Therefore, this fault does not harm us. Why does something that existed before disappear later, becoming the fault of annihilation? Furthermore, if one asserts that things exist, one will not only fall into the fault of annihilation, but also into the fault of permanence. Like this: If things exist by their own nature, things should not change into non-existence. If things exist by their own nature, then they should not later become non-existent, because there is no change in self-nature. Therefore, the view of permanence is waiting there. Furthermore, at the time of nirvana
