Commentary on Chapter Twenty-one. Commentary on Chapter Twenty-one. Chapter Twenty-one, Examination of Arising and Ceasing. First, a general refutation of arising and ceasing, then a specific refutation of arising. The former is divided into the actual text and the elimination of contradictions with what is seen. The first part is further divided into refuting simultaneous and separate establishment, refuting based on examining exhaustion and non-exhaustion, refuting based on examining emptiness and non-emptiness, and refuting based on examining one and different. The first part is divided into three parts: summary, detailed explanation, and conclusion. The first part is: Here it is said that time exists by its own nature, because it is the cause of arising and ceasing. Here, sprouts and so on arise depending on certain specific times, and cease depending on certain specific times, even if there is a collection of causes and conditions, it is not always the case. Therefore, time exists. If arising and ceasing exist by their own nature, then even if time is their cause, it does not exist. Ceasing without arising, or not existing simultaneously. Arising without ceasing, or not existing simultaneously. If arising and ceasing exist, then they either exist separately without depending on each other, or they exist simultaneously. If analyzed in this way, they do not exist in either way. Why? Ceasing does not depend on arising, or exist simultaneously with it. Arising does not depend on ceasing, or exist simultaneously with it. The second part is: Statement of the proposition: Ceasing without arising, how can it exist? Establishing the inference that without arising, there will be death. Conclusion: Ceasing without arising does not exist. Ceasing without arising, how can it exist? It is unreasonable. Why? Because without arising, there will be death, but we have never seen death without arising. Therefore, ceasing without arising does not exist. Similarly, ceasing and arising simultaneously also do not exist. Ceasing and arising simultaneously, how can it exist? Death and birth simultaneously, do not exist. Ceasing and arising simultaneously, how can it exist? If it exists, then death and birth will occur simultaneously.

Birth and death, like light and darkness, are mutually contradictory, and therefore cannot exist simultaneously. Therefore, destruction does not occur simultaneously with birth. Just as destruction does not exist without birth or simultaneously with it, so birth does not exist without destruction or simultaneously with it. Like this: How can birth exist without destruction? For things, impermanence never does not exist. How can birth exist without depending on destruction? It is not reasonable to exist. Because for things that have the nature of birth, impermanence never does not exist, all things at all times have the nature of aging and death. As it is said: Where is there a thing that does not age and does not die? Therefore, all things are always associated with impermanence. Therefore, without destruction, there is no birth. How can birth exist simultaneously with destruction? Birth and death do not exist at the same time. How can birth exist simultaneously with destruction? If it exists, then birth and death will exist at the same time, but birth and death are mutually contradictory, so they cannot exist at the same time. Therefore, birth and destruction cannot be established simultaneously. The third question is: Which are established mutually simultaneously or not mutually simultaneously? How can those things that do not exist be established? Birth and destruction, which are not established separately mutually simultaneously or not mutually simultaneously, how can those things that are established in other ways exist? Because there is no other aspect besides self-nature and other-nature. Second, examining and refuting exhaustion and non-exhaustion: Furthermore, are these things of birth and destruction of the nature of exhaustion or of the nature of non-exhaustion? Neither case is reasonable. Exhausted things do not have birth, and non-exhausted things do not have birth. Exhausted things do not have destruction, and non-exhausted things do not have destruction. Things that belong to the nature of exhaustion are destroyed and disappear, and for it, birth, which contradicts it, cannot exist. Non-exhausted things are indestructible, and it
