Explanation of Chapter Twenty. Explanation of Chapter Twenty. In the twentieth chapter, "Examination of Combination," there are three parts: refuting the fruit produced by combination, refuting the fruit produced by non-combination, and summarizing the refutation. The first part is divided into two parts: detailed explanation and concise summary. The first part is divided into: refuting by examining the existence or non-existence of the fruit, refuting by examining giving and not giving, refuting simultaneous and prior existence, refuting the transformation of the state of the cause, refuting by examining cessation and non-cessation, refuting by examining visible and invisible, refuting by examining meeting and not meeting, refuting by examining emptiness and non-emptiness, refuting by examining one and many, and refuting by examining the existence or non-existence of essence. The first of these ten refutations is: If time exists, it is because it is the simultaneous cause of the production of fruit. Here, although a sprout has the combination of causes and conditions such as seeds, it does not arise because the difference in time is not close. Just like externalists, it is also the same for internal entities. As the Bhagavan said: "The actions of sentient beings, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be lost. When the combination of causes and conditions is met, the fruit will definitely ripen." Therefore, if it is thought that time exists as the simultaneous cause of the fruit, then if the fruit exists, time will become its simultaneous cause, but the fruit does not exist. Here, if it is thought that sprouts and other fruits arise from the combination of causes and conditions such as seeds, then does it arise from the fruit that exists in the combination, or does it arise from the fruit that does not exist in the combination? If it is thought: If the combination of cause and condition itself can produce the fruit, and if the combination has the fruit, then how can it arise from the combination itself? If the combination of cause and condition itself can produce the fruit, and if the combination itself has the fruit, then how can the fruit that exists in the combination arise from the combination itself? Just like the yogurt that exists in the wooden bowl cannot be produced by the wooden bowl. If it is thought that there is no fruit in the combination, then if the combination of cause and condition itself can produce the fruit, and if there is no fruit in the combination, then how can it arise from the combination itself? If there is no fruit in the combination of cause and condition, then how can the fruit arise from the combination of cause and condition itself? Then

Because it does not exist, like sesame oil from sand. Furthermore, if from the aggregation of causes and conditions, there is a result, then it should be obtainable from the aggregation, but in reality, it cannot be obtained from the aggregation itself. If it is thought that the result can be obtained from the aggregation of causes and conditions, like yogurt from a churn, then from the aggregation of seeds, etc., the result (referring to the sprout) cannot be obtained. Because it does not exist, if something does not exist somewhere, then it will not arise from there, like sesame oil not arising from sand. If it is said that the result arises from the aggregation, therefore it can be inferred that the result exists in the aggregation, then, if something exists somewhere, it will not arise from there, just as yogurt does not arise from a churn. From this inference, why not conclude that the result does not exist in the aggregation? If it is thought that both views contradict inference, just as existence is unreasonable, non-existence is also unreasonable, then, we are not trying to prove non-existence, just as it is said in the Madhyamakahṛdayakārikā: This is not denying existence itself, nor is it completely clinging to non-existence. Does saying "not blue" mean saying "is white"? In order to abandon all the elaborations of both, to attain the bliss of peace. It refutes what others consider to be non-existence, but similarly, this is not to prove existence itself, but to eliminate what others consider to be non-existence, because it is desired to eliminate the two extremes, thereby accomplishing the Middle Way. As it is said in the Śataśāstra: Whoever thinks that the result exists, and whoever thinks that the result does not exist, the pillars of the house, etc., the purpose of decoration will also become meaningless. Therefore, the result that exists in the aggregation does not arise. If it is thought that no result arises from the aggregation of causes and conditions, then the causes and conditions are no longer causes and conditions, becoming the same. If it is thought that no result arises at all from the aggregation of causes and conditions, then, just as fire and charcoal, etc., do not have sprouts, therefore they will not become the cause of sprouts, those seeds, etc., that are manifestly considered to be the causes and conditions of sprouts, are also the same as not being the causes and conditions of sprouts.
