Earth and so on are said to be the conditions for bodies. If karma and afflictions are empty, then how can one speak of an empty body? Karma and afflictions are merely nominally said to be the conditions for bodies, but in reality, they are not. How karma and afflictions lack inherent existence has already been explained. If karma and afflictions are empty of inherent existence, then how can one say that their result, the body, has inherent existence? One should not think so. Fourth, karma has inherent existence because there is an enjoyer of its result. For example: Any being obscured by ignorance, who possesses craving, is the enjoyer of the result of karma. However, this sinful karma is done by oneself, and its ripening should be experienced by oneself personally. Therefore, the agent of karma is neither other than nor the same as karma, because it cannot be said to be the same or other. Therefore, if one says there is an enjoyer of the result, then if there is no karma, how can there be its agent and enjoyer of the result? For example: Because this karma does not arise from conditions, nor does it arise from non-conditions, therefore, there is no agent. If karma and the agent do not exist, then how can the result born from karma exist? If the result does not exist, then how can the enjoyer exist? If karma exists, then one should consider whether it arises from conditions or from non-conditions. The first case is unreasonable, because the examination of conditions has already been explained. The second case is also unreasonable, because "If there is no cause, then there is no result, and no cause," etc., the examination of the agent and karma has already been explained. Because, as mentioned above, this karma does not arise from conditions, nor does it arise from non-conditions, therefore, there is no agent for it. When karma and the agent do not exist, how can the result born from karma exist? If the result does not exist, then how can the enjoyer exist? For example, all

It should be known that it is not existent by its own nature. Secondly, to show by example that it is reasonable to act without inherent existence: Thus, if you establish all things as being without inherent existence, then the principle stated by the Blessed One, "One experiences the ripening of one's own actions," will be refuted, and because you slander actions and results, you will become the leader of the nihilists, if it is said so. We are not nihilists, but rather we refute the assertion of both existence and non-existence, thereby clarifying the path of deep dependent origination, which is free from duality, that is, the path to the city of Nirvana. We do not say that actions, results, agents, etc., do not exist. However, we establish that these are without inherent existence. If you think that because there is no inherent existence, it is unreasonable to act, so the fault still exists, that is not the case, because it has not been seen that only those with inherent existence can act, and only those without inherent existence can act. For example, in the world, only things without inherent existence, such as pots, can perform their own functions, such as drawing water. Furthermore, that it is possible to act without inherent existence must be ascertained from this very clear example: As the Buddha emanates, He emanates with the perfection of miraculous power, That emanation also emanates, Again, others are emanated in the same way. As the teacher, the Bhagavan, emanates an emanation similar to himself by the power of the perfection of miraculous power, and when that emanation emanates another emanation, any emanation that emanates another emanation is empty and without inherent existence. Also, any other emanation that is emanated by an emanation is also empty and without inherent existence, even so, these emanations without inherent existence have the names of action, activity, and agent, etc. Likewise, whatever the agent does, what is done is also like the appearance of an illusion, just as an illusion is emanated again, so is the practice. Here, whatever acts as the agent is like the appearance of an illusion, that is, empty of inherent existence. The agent without inherent existence

Whatever action is done by that agent is also empty of inherent existence. For example, it should be understood like an illusionist creating another illusion. Not only is it reasonable to view the absence of inherent existence through the example of illusion, but it should also be clearly understood that these examples also clearly show that things are without inherent existence, that is to say: Afflictions, actions, and all bodies, the agent and the results, are like a city of Gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. Afflictions such as desire, meritorious and non-meritorious and unwavering actions, the body, the agent self, the fruition of karmic results, and the lord and the arising cause, due to the differences of place and time, like the appearance of mansions, men and women, etc. in the sky, like the city of Gandharvas, and the appearance of very clear water from the sun's rays moved by the wind, like mirages, and like dreams, it is only an imputation of truth to the illusion of knowledge, and it should be known that it has no inherent existence. Therefore, since even in conventional terms, it is not accepted that things have inherent existence, only the Madhyamikas do not have the fault of falling into the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, it should be known as such. This concludes the commentary on the seventeenth chapter, "Examination of Action," from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way. Explanation of the Seventeenth Chapter.
