Taking views as an attachment in the world of characteristics of views is a great clinging. As long as there is attachment to such a great clinging, there is no peace, because only by abandoning all clinging can liberation be attained. As long as there is attachment to clinging to self and what belongs to self, and as long as there is attachment to the existence of nirvana, etc., it is not a means. Therefore, all the efforts of those who seek nirvana will surely become meaningless. Therefore, those who desire liberation should abandon all these. Fourth, the teaching that there is no acceptance or rejection of samsara and nirvana. Moreover, the sutra says: Son of good family, the Tathagata does not eliminate samsara, nor does he accomplish nirvana. Why is that? Because in equality, there is neither becoming samsara, nor transcending nirvana, nor becoming completely afflicted, nor becoming completely purified. What is said is established. Where there is no arising of nirvana, nor is there the elimination of samsara, what is samsara in that? What is nirvana to be sought? In the ultimate truth, since no dharma is perceived in anything, there is no arising of nirvana, that is, there is no imputation. There is also no elimination of samsara, that is, there is no complete exhaustion. In that, what is samsara to be sought for what is to be exhausted? What is nirvana to be sought for what is to be attained? That is, it should not be sought at all. Not thinking of samsara or nirvana in any way means transcending the wilderness of samsara and also reaching the city of nirvana. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Noble Subduer of Mara: Then, at that time, Manjushri, who had become a youth, thought of the form of the evil Mara, as if he were bound by the shackles of the threshold of a door, falling on the ground and crying out, saying: I am bound by strong bonds! I am bound by strong bonds! From (the sutra): Sinner, by whom have you been abandoned, by whom have you been bound? He replied: Manjushri, I do not know by whom I have been bound. He said: Sinner, just as you perceive yourself to be bound when you are not bound, so do all ordinary people.

Beginning with "the perception of permanence as permanent." Furthermore, sinful one, if you are to be liberated, from what will you be liberated? Answer: I will not be liberated from anything. Question: Those sinful ones who have been liberated, unless they fully understand the non-veridical cognition, they will not be liberated from anything. If they fully understand it, it is called liberation. It is like this saying. From this scripture, it is known that because of non-veridicality, merely the reversed thought, the vine of bondage being completely severed is called liberation, nirvana, just as the fire blazing perceived in a dream is extinguished by water. Commentary on the sixteenth chapter, "Examination of Bondage and Liberation" from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way.
