Chapter Sixteen Commentary Chapter Sixteen Commentary Chapter Sixteen, examining bondage and liberation, has four parts: refuting samsara and nirvana, refuting bondage and liberation, showing what should be abandoned by those who desire liberation, and showing that there is nothing to be abandoned or taken in samsara and nirvana. The first part has two parts: refuting samsara and refuting nirvana. The first part also has two parts. First, refuting the samsara of formations. Here it is said: The nature of things exists, because samsara exists. If the nature of things did not exist, then who would go from one place to another and wander in samsara? Samsara is just a name. As it is said in the sutra: Although the Tathagata speaks of samsara, there is no samsara in it; although the Tathagata speaks of nirvana, there is no nirvana in it. Therefore, samsara is not truly existent. If samsara exists, then it must be a formation or a sentient being that wanders in it. If formations wander, then: If they are permanent, they do not wander; if they are impermanent, they also do not wander. If formations wander, then what wanders? Does something permanent or impermanent wander? If these formations are permanent, they do not wander, because permanence is contrary to the activity of coming and going, for example, impermanent things such as pots are considered to have activity. If they are impermanent, they also do not wander, because impermanent things perish as soon as they arise, so they do not drift anywhere. If it is thought that formations are causes and effects, they arise in a continuous sequence, and only those that continuously run and become impermanent wander, this is also unreasonable. For the moment, there is no samsara in the arising of the result, because it does not come from anywhere and does not go anywhere. There is also no samsara in the destruction of the cause, because the reason is the same as before. If the later moment arises, the former moment wanders, if the former and later moments are one, then it can be said that they are not one, because they are the objects of cause and effect. Like the eye, form, and eye consciousness. If the former and later moments are different, then it is unreasonable for the former moment to wander when the later moment arises, because ordinary beings are born in samsara, and Arhats

Those will also be cyclic. When other lamps are lit, it will also become saying that the dead lamp is lit. Therefore, constant cyclic existence is unreasonable, so for impermanent conditioned things, there is no cyclic existence. Second, refuting the cyclic existence of the person: Here, those who dwell in the mother and child section, who believe that there are certain persons who are different from the aggregates, realms, and sources, and who desire cyclic existence and liberation, this is because it contradicts reason, so conditioned things do not cycle, but the self cycles. For sentient beings, this order is also the same. If it is said that sentient beings cycle, then, if analyzed in detail, what is cycling, is it permanent or impermanent? For the order that conditioned things should not cycle, it is also the same for those who believe that sentient beings cycle, therefore, sentient beings are also not cyclic. If it is said that the reason why conditioned things should not cycle is not the same as sentient beings, because unlike conditioned things, I do not become permanent or impermanent, however, I cannot be said to be the same or different from the aggregates, so it cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent. If it is said that the person cycles, then, in the aggregates, sources, and realms, searching for it in five ways, if it does not exist, then what will cycle? If it is said that in the Essence of the Middle Way, the person truly exists, and will not cycle or be liberated, because it is imputed, like a house. Because it is something to be said, like a house. Because it is something to be said, like a smell. Just as saying that roots, trees, soil, reeds, and bricks are imputed as a house, it is merely imputed as a person based on the aggregates, realms, and sources, because there are none of those, similarly, because it is something to be said, there is no bondage and liberation. If it is believed that the unspeakable person cycles, this is also unreasonable, if there is a certain person, then there will be cyclic existence, but in reality it does not exist, because in the aggregates, realms, and sources, searching for that person in five ways cannot be found. How to search? Wood itself is not fire, and fire is not outside of wood. Fire is not connected to wood, there is no wood in fire, it is not there. The nature of fire and wood, and all the order of approaching and taking. Just as saying that I am not the nature of the aggregates, etc., that
