Thus, things like pots are causes and effects, or parts and wholes, or characteristics and bases, or qualities and possessors of qualities. Having thus established them, one should apply all the refutations in the manner of fire and fuel, without exception. Secondly, to show that those who hold extreme views are not skilled in the meaning of the teachings: Those who teach that selves and things, are either identical with them or different, one should not think that they are skilled in the meaning of the teachings. Thus, like actions and agents, they do not rely on the establishment of selves and grasping, and pots and cloths, etc., as being established in dependence on each other. Instead, they presume to understand the meaning of the scriptures without error, based on the meaning closely examined by the tenets of the heretics. Those of their own schools who speak of things as real, who teach that the self that grasps and the things that are grasped, such as pots and cloths, are either identical with them, that grasping is other, and that the self is other, etc., are not considered by the teacher to be skilled in the meaning of the teachings of the Sugata, which is the supremely profound dependent arising, free from permanence and annihilation, and the suchness of that which is named in dependence. Thus, the body of the yogi who has understood the suchness of the Dharma by examining fire and fuel will not be burned by the fire of the end of time or by the fires of afflictions such as desire. Thus it is said: The Blessed One said: Even if burned for hundreds of thousands of eons, the sky has never been burned before. When will one realize that all dharmas are like the sky? He will never be burned in the fire again. If the Buddhafields were to burn, may all these burning things be pacified. If one makes this prayer from the state of samadhi, then there will be no change in those lands. So it is said. Commentary on the tenth chapter of the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, examining fire and fuel. Explanation of the tenth chapter.
