If cessation exists, does it exist in something that exists or something that does not exist? For the moment, let's say it exists in something that exists. Cessation is not reasonable. Because in the same thing, existence and non-existence are not reasonable. For something that exists and whose nature has not been lost, cessation is not reasonable, because cessation is non-existence. In the same thing, existence and non-existence cannot exist simultaneously. Just as cessation is not reasonable for something that exists, cessation is also not reasonable for something that becomes non-existent. Cessation is also not reasonable for something that becomes non-existent and is not existent, just like a two-headed thing, it is indivisible. Just as a two-headed thing is known to be non-existent, it is indivisible. Furthermore, if something called cessation causes things to cease, does cessation need another cessation, or does it not need it? Cessation by its own nature is not existent, nor is it by another cessation. Just as birth is not caused by itself and others. Cessation is not ceased by its own nature, nor is it caused to cease by another cessation, it should be known just as birth is not caused by itself and others. Like this: Birth, how does this unborn thing give rise to its own nature? And so on. Cessation, how does this unceased thing cease its own nature? If the ceased ceases, then what is there to cease after ceasing? Combine it like this. If, as it is said, if another birth, etc., if another cessation, then its cessation will be endless. If the unceased ceases, then everything will cease in the same way. It should be said like this. If you analyze it in that way with reason, then for you, won't the characteristics of conditioned phenomena such as birth also disappear? If you analyze it, it will indeed disappear, but there is no fault. Because our birth and so on are acknowledged as they are said in the world, but they are not truly acknowledged. Sentient beings in the world cling to the nature of things that appear like illusions without inherent existence, and they cling to birth and death, thereby establishing names such as birth. The Madhyamikas also only acknowledge these names as they are in the world, on the level of conventional truth.

If the general characteristics of conditioned phenomena such as arising are refuted, but conditioned phenomena exist because there are specific characteristics such as solidity and concealment, then: Arising, abiding, and ceasing, Because they are not established, there are no conditioned phenomena. As explained before, because the characteristics of conditioned phenomena such as arising, abiding, and ceasing are not established, there are no conditioned phenomena. Since there are no conditioned phenomena, how can their specific characteristics exist? Secondly, incidentally refuting the unconditioned: If it is argued that conditioned phenomena exist because their opposite, the unconditioned, exists, then: Since conditioned phenomena are utterly unestablished, How can the unconditioned be established? As explained before, since conditioned phenomena are utterly unestablished, how can the unconditioned, such as space, analytical cessation, non-analytical cessation, and suchness, which others assert, be established? Because the contradictory conditioned phenomena are not established. The Vaibhashika school says: The unconditioned are two cessations, space, and suchness. Analytical cessation is the cessation obtained by analytically discriminating manifest afflictions with wisdom, and it is analytical cessation. It is true because it causes things to cease and separate. Non-analytical cessation is when some things cease without separating. Space is that which creates opportunity and is characterized by non-obstruction. Suchness is the emptiness of the nature of things, indicated by things that did not exist before, do not exist after destruction, do not exist in relation to each other, and do not exist permanently. These are also not established in the ultimate sense. In the "Essence of the Middle Way" (Madhyamakahrdaya): The cessation of the unborn, Is not truly a cessation. Because it is the cessation of the unborn, Like non-analytical cessation. If there is no arising for phenomena such as conditioned phenomena, then what unborn or born do you want to cease? Similarly, space and suchness should also be understood to be refuted in the same way. Thirdly, refuting the contradiction with the scriptures: If there is no arising, etc., then the Bhagavan said: Bhikshus, conditioned phenomena are manifested as arising, destruction, and change from abiding.

How should we understand what is said to be "manifest"? Like a dream, like an illusion, like a city of gandharvas, thus is birth, thus is abiding, thus is destruction. Just as dreams, illusions, and cities of gandharvas are not born by their own nature, yet in the world they are spoken of and named with terms like "illusion," so too, birth, abiding, and destruction, although they do not exist by their own nature, should be understood as being spoken of only in accordance with what is commonly known in the world. As it is also said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "These connections of skin, sinews, flesh, and bones, I think 'this is my wife,' and foolish children generate desire, but they do not know that women are like illusions. Just as in the dream of a young girl, she sees a son born and then die, and is happy when he is born and unhappy when he dies, so should you know all phenomena. Just as a city of gandharvas, a mirage, like an illusion, like a dream, all phenomena should be known in this way, contemplating signs, their essence is empty." As it is said. This is the commentary on the seventh chapter, Examination of the Conditioned, from the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way.
