Explanation of Chapter Seven. Explanation of Chapter Seven. Chapter Seven is the analysis of conditioned phenomena. It extensively refutes the nature of conditioned phenomena, incidentally refutes the unconditioned, and refutes the contradiction with the scriptures, in three parts. The first part has two divisions: general refutation and specific refutation. First, the general refutation: If it is said that the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are of the nature of conditioned phenomena, because the scriptures say that arising, etc., are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, then arising, etc., are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena in the conventional sense, but not in the ultimate sense. If arising is truly the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, then is arising conditioned or unconditioned? If arising is conditioned, then it should have three characteristics. If one thinks that arising is conditioned, then it should also have three characteristics such as arising, because these three characteristics are unmistakable for all conditioned phenomena. Therefore, like form, etc., arising becomes the subject to be proven, but it does not become the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. If arising is unconditioned, how can it be the characteristic of conditioned phenomena? If one thinks that arising is unconditioned, because it is separated from the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena, how can it be the characteristic of conditioned phenomena? Just as a cow does not become the characteristic of a horse. If one thinks that these arising, etc., are conditioned, then are they individually or collectively the characteristic? Each of the arising, etc., cannot be the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, because if there is no abiding and ceasing at the time of arising, then arising separated from them, like space, is not reasonable as the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. If there is no arising and ceasing at the time of abiding, because it is separated from them, abiding also does not exist, like a flower in the sky. Similarly, if there is no abiding and arising at the time of ceasing, because it is separated from them, ceasing also does not exist. Therefore, it is unreasonable for the three to be characteristics individually. It is also unreasonable for the three to be collectively the characteristic, because how can all three be together in one thing at one time? Like light and darkness, they are mutually

Because of mutual contradiction. If arising, etc., have three characteristics, what fault would there be? Even if it were unconditioned, what fault would there be? To arising, abiding, and ceasing, if there were another conditioned characteristic, then it would become endless. If not, then they are not conditioned. If it is thought that arising, abiding, and ceasing, etc., have another conditioned characteristic, then they also have other characteristics, so it would become endless. In that case, since the outer limit of the characteristics cannot be understood, arising, etc., cannot be established. If arising, etc., do not have characteristics, then they would become unconditioned, and in that case, it would not be reasonable to be the characteristics of the conditioned. Secondly, individually refuting, divided into three: refuting arising, refuting abiding, and refuting ceasing. The first is to state the former's view: Here, many respected people say that even though arising, etc., have other arisings, etc., it will not lead to the fault of being endless, because the root characteristic and the subsequent characteristic establish each other. For example, when a virtuous or afflicted dharma arises, it gives rise to itself and fifteen others, namely, the dharma itself, having arising, abiding, aging, impermanence, and if it is an afflicted dharma, then there is wrong liberation, and if it is a virtuous dharma, then there is right liberation, and if it is definitely arising, then there is its definite arising, and if it is definitely not arising, then there is its definite non-arising, these are all retinue. Among them, the seven from the arising of arising to the non-arising of non-definite arising are the retinue of the retinue. Among them, the root arising gives rise to the arising of arising, and the arising of arising only gives rise to the root arising. The root arising gives rise to the dharma itself and the six root characteristics, the six subsequent characteristics, and the arising of arising, while the arising of arising only gives rise to the root arising. Similarly, non-definite arising does not cause the fourteen dharmas to definitely arise, and the non-arising of non-definite arising is only non-definite arising.
