O! Even if one accepts a hundred precepts, there are still stains of wrongdoing. For these vows of mine, a mendicant, May the wise and compassionate deity consider for a moment. Wherever one dwells, the appearance will increase, One's own continuum is bound by the noose of gain and respect, While others' continua are tormented by jealousy and competitive minds, One should not dwell in such a place even for a moment. From now until the end of life, In the midst of snow mountains, valleys, and forests, One should always dwell like a rhinoceros, And not dwell in cities and amidst large crowds. Until one has not obtained the stability in the mind, That cannot be moved by the eight worldly concerns, Other than taming one's own continuum alone, One should not harm one's own benefit through the means of benefiting others. The three Dharma robes and the alms bowl, and so on, Other than the necessities for one's own livelihood, Gold and wealth, and other remaining items, One should not hold even a sesame seed's worth for one's own sake. Never speak of others' faults, Unless it is meaningful and in accordance with the Dharma, Wars, thieves, the talk of kings, and so on, One should never engage in deluded teachings. For the sake of the Dharma, endure hardships and practice patience, Renounce the world and strive for the meaning of yoga. The following retinue should not exceed four, They should be content with little desire and be of the same mind as oneself. If I violate these vows, May the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, And the lord of compassion, Avalokiteśvara, the protector, Equate me with dogs, pigs, sheep, and donkeys. What I have said, may you also Keep in mind and practice accordingly. Even if I die, there is no other testament than this, Even if we meet, there are no other words to say. The reason why I rely on solitude is, Not because the retinue and friends have wearied me, Nor because of greed for gain, respect, and fame, But because I see the suffering of samsara as a pit of fire, Extremely difficult to endure, And because the solitary place praised by the Blessed One in many scriptures, Is even more pleasing than a lotus grove. It is like this: For whom there is not even a speck of fault, Whose wondrous qualities and glory are exceedingly magnificent, The banner of fame flutters in the three realms, I prostrate to the Thubwang, the god of gods! Listen, everyone!

O fortunate friends, the sun of the teachings has set on the western mountain peak, the movement of life and body is like the flow of a river. Those who desire liberation should diligently practice mindfulness. Possessing the seven precious jewels, ruling over the four great continents, enjoying the splendor of the ten virtues of immeasurable sentient beings, enjoying the bliss of perfect higher realms, even the glory of a universal monarch is like a tree by the water. Having long resided on the summit of Mount Meru, enjoying the bliss of joy and happiness in a garden of complete gathering, even Indra with a thousand eyes, revered by the assembly of immortal attendants, is but a slave of existence. Having long abandoned the suffering of physical and mental torment, even the father of the world, Brahma with a golden womb, who spends many eons in the bliss of samadhi, cannot escape the bonds of samsara. Who can endure the suffering of hell, where a chain of flames blazes upon the body, which, if touched, can turn even the most solid Mount Meru into ashes in an instant? The form of a preta, like the dried top of a palm tree, whose mere glance dries up great rivers and renders trees fruitless, is terrifying and causes shivers to anyone who sees it. The darkness of ignorance, which is bewildered about what to accept and reject, the vajra sparks that devour each other, and the suffering of various animals, where the rain of cutting and using constantly falls upon the body, who can endure it? Knowing that the perfections of existence are so insignificant and filled with numerous faults, in order to liberate myself and others from the ocean of existence, I, the one who has heard much, will go to the solitary forest. Like a bird longing for rain hearing the sound of thunder, this talk of solitude falls into my heart. In order to make the meaning of what I have heard meaningful, the youth of wisdom will go to the solitary forest. Like a flock of geese seeing a lotus lake, my mind is greatly drawn to the remote place. In order to take the essence of this precious human body, the youth of wisdom will go to the solitary forest. Like a young bee seeing a garden of a hundred petals, my mind is attached to the taste of solitude. In order to taste the nectar of samadhi, the youth of wisdom will go to the solitary forest. Like the cool Malayan wind in spring, the medicinal landscape of the forest falls into my heart. In order to destroy the army of the maras of affliction.

Ra. The young wise one goes to the solitary forest. This speaks of the joy of solitude. Therefore, your determination towards virtuous practice is excellent. By fathoming the depths of learning, making the practice of renouncing this life the core, there is no offering that pleases the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas more. In this regard, present-day teachings and studies seem to be for the benefit of others. Taking the acquisition of fame and wealth as the primary task, empowerments and teachings seem to be for gathering followers, but the essence is not seen in them. Therefore, considering that teaching and study are beneficial for the continuation of the Dharma, I had previously said that it would be appropriate to consider engaging in teaching and study for a while. Now, do not rely on any retinue other than renouncing this life and seeking liberation. Do not stay long in one place. Furthermore, do not strive to lay the foundation for monasteries, etc. Fulfill the vow to spend your life in solitude. If you are in good health, arrange for the auspicious meeting of teacher and disciple within three years. If it is necessary to meet before that, I am here, writing letters like this, and if it is possible to send them to Sakya, send them. My reasons have been explained to the two Geshs. May auspiciousness arise from the great sacred site of glorious Sakya on the first day of the fourth month! May it be auspicious! A word of delight in solitude given to Dharma Lord Lobsang Drakpa.
