Generating the path of seeing does not depend on further advancement in views. The view of the Prasangikas follows the post-attainment of the noble ones below the tenth bhumi, because in their post-attainment, they completely apply dependent arising phenomena as merely names, merely designations. This view is also abandoned at the level of Buddhahood, because Buddhas do not perceive any characteristics of name and meaning at all times. Therefore, although both Madhyamaka Prasangika and Svatantrika equally assert that ultimate reality is beyond expression, the unique difference between them lies in holding dependent arising as merely illusion and holding it as merely imputation, merely a name. When holding it as merely illusion, one accepts that in conventional truth, experience and awareness are merely illusion. One also accepts that what is to be abandoned and the antidote are merely illusion in experience and awareness. However, for those who accept dependent arising as merely imputation, delusion is fundamentally uprooted, and what is to be abandoned and the antidote are merely imputed by conceptual thought. I have had four stages of arising of realization of Madhyamaka, namely: first, nihilistic emptiness; second, appearance emptiness; third, understanding dependent arising as illusion; and fourth, understanding dependent arising as imputation, without basis. The first is the emptiness that destroys conventional substantial clinging with reasoning, like smashing a vase with a hammer. This also causes the clinging to truth through rational analysis to recede and merely creates the cause for developing faith in emptiness. The second is the realization that there is no inherent existence from the very moment of illusory appearance. This causes the conceptual imputation of external objects to recede, but because it does not abandon the clinging that flees to internal experience and awareness, it does not transcend the view of the Mind-Only false aspectarians. The third is the realization that both internal awareness and external appearances depend on causes and conditions, and therefore, like illusion, they are merely appearances in conventional truth, without any inherent existence whatsoever. Although there is no clinging to extremes in this, there is a holding of the meaning of phenomena as merely illusion, independent of the words and concepts of dependent arising. Therefore, it does not transcend the Yogacara Madhyamaka. The fourth is the realization that when the phenomena of dependent arising are properly analyzed with reasoning, one cannot find even a little bit of their own entity, and when not analyzed, they become objects of convention. Therefore, it is realized as merely imputation, fabricated by conceptual thought and designated by names. Such a realization of dependent arising
