For sentient beings, there is no need for other means of knowledge to show that they possess the Dharmakaya nature and the qualities of a Buddha. The meaning of saying that the Tathagatagarbha is permanent, stable, and unconditioned is that it is shown to be permanent with an unchanging essence, and unconditioned as not being created by causes and conditions. The very nature of the mind, luminosity, does not change its essence in the impure state when it is defiled by the three kinds of defilements of afflictions, karma, and birth. In the pure and impure states, the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies, the mind-made body born of uncontaminated karma, and the inconceivable death and birth, etc., do not change their essence. Considering these, the realm of sentient beings and the Tathagatagarbha are said to be permanent, stable, and unconditioned. In the state of utmost purity, the very nature of the mind, luminosity, accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings until samsara is empty, and therefore possesses inexhaustible qualities. Considering that it is the same as the limit of the future, that Dharmakaya is said to be permanent, stable, and unconditioned by karma and afflictions. In all states, the nature of sentient beings is luminosity. Birth, which is characterized by newly acquired faculties; destruction, which is characterized by the cessation of faculties; abiding, which is the uninterrupted continuation of similar kinds from birth to death; and joy, which is characterized by changing to another state, are all characterized by changing to another state. Because it is free from the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena, it is called unconditioned. In all states, the essence of self-luminous nature does not change, so it is called permanent. Therefore, in order to dispel some of the wrong conceptions of those to be trained regarding the meaning of permanence and stability, etc., the words permanence, stability, etc., are applied in a straightforward manner. It is not the view of either Madhyamaka or Yogacara to think of some phenomena established in ultimate truth apart from the mind as the Tathagatagarbha, and to explain it as permanent and stable, etc., and it contradicts the sutras that teach the Tathagatagarbha and their intentions.

It is not the view of any treatise such as the Madhyamaka Dharmadhatu Stotra and the Ratnagotravibhāga. In general, for the sutras that teach the essence of the Sugata, it is necessary to know the meaning of the direct literal meaning and the implied meaning. Because these sutras are not interpreted literally, but are interpreted in a provisional way by both Madhyamaka and Cittamātra. The direct literal meaning is that it is not established even nominally in the state of sentient beings and the state of Buddhahood, because it is no different from the self of the heretics. Regarding the implied meaning, there are two views: Madhyamaka and Cittamātra. The first is divided into two: those covered by conventional truth and those covered by ultimate truth. The first refers to the self-nature of the mind, which has the aspect of awareness and clarity, and is not confused about the nature of the mind in all states. In the Paramita Vehicle, it is referred to by names such as "mind," "alaya-vijñana," "grasping consciousness," "vipaka-vijñana," and "Tathagatagarbha." In the Vajrayana, it is referred to by other names such as "Cause Tantra," "mind luminosity," "luminosity increasing," "luminosity near attainment," and "space-pervading space vajra." According to the Paramita Vehicle, the state of being controlled by karma, afflictions, and conceptual thoughts is called samsara. According to the Vajrayana, it is called samsara because it is controlled by the eighty types of self-nature conceptual thoughts or the obscurations of the four states. The state in which these obscurations are completely purified is called Buddha and liberation. This meaning is clearly explained in the Madhyamaka Dharmadhatu Stotra and the Praise to the Vajra of Mind. The second implied meaning, covered by ultimate truth, refers to the aforementioned mind, which in reality does not abide in any extreme such as existence or non-existence. This state is nominally called ultimate truth. It is with this in mind that the Tathagatagarbha and alaya-vijñana, etc., are taught. In the Madhyamakavatara, it says, "The alaya-vijñana exists, and the person exists, and these aggregates merely exist." What is said is such a profound meaning that it does not contradict reason.
