Here, a rough explanation of the four philosophical schools will be given. Among these, the divisions within each school, their differences, and the differences between higher and lower schools, are threefold. The first has four parts. Firstly, regarding the Sutra School (Sautrāntika), no clear texts differentiating it have been seen. Some Tibetans, like the proponents of true appearance in the Mind-Only School (Cittamatra), assert that appearance and consciousness are identical. The difference between the Vaibhāṣika and the Sautrāntika is that, at the foundational stage, both agree that among the five aggregates of knowable objects, form, mind, and mental factors are substantially existent. However, regarding non-associated compositional factors and the unconditioned, the Vaibhāṣika considers them substantially existent, while the Sautrāntika considers them imputedly existent. Regarding mental factors, the Vaibhāṣika believes they lack the aspect of an object and lack self-awareness, while the Sautrāntika believes the opposite. It is said that both assert there are various countless things. Regarding form, the Vaibhāṣika believes there exists form that is invisible and without obstruction, while the Sautrāntika believes all form has obstruction. In the stage of the path, there is not much disagreement, as all individuals of the three capacities attain liberation by meditating on the selflessness of the person. Regarding the result, the Vaibhāṣika believes that both the nirvana with remainder and the nirvana without remainder are substantially existent results of separation. The Sautrāntika believes there is no cessation that is a mere negation, where the object to be abandoned is blocked by its antidote. The Vaibhāṣika believes that an Arhat can degenerate and revert to a Stream-enterer, etc. The Sautrāntika believes that only the meditative stabilization of dwelling in bliss in this very life can degenerate, and does not believe in degenerating from a result called 'subject to degeneration.' Secondly, regarding the divisions of the Mind-Only School, among the two, true and false appearances, the proponents of true appearance are divided into those who assert manifold non-duality and those who assert that the number of apprehended and apprehender are equal. The first believes that the appearances of blue, yellow, red, etc., that arise from consciousness in a single moment, are the nature of a single consciousness. The second believes that the appearances of blue, yellow, red, etc., are also different substances, and the consciousness that apprehends them is also a different substance, like iron needles piercing through. Some Tibetans believe that the appearance in consciousness is truly existent in the face of a consciousness that is different in substance from the consciousness that manifests it, like half an egg." } ] ============================================================
