Explanation of Chapter Two from 'The Illuminating Lamp, Dispelling the Darkness of the Mind: A Commentary on the Guhyasamaja Tantra'. Explanation of Chapter Two from 'The Illuminating Lamp, Dispelling the Darkness of the Mind: A Commentary on the Guhyasamaja Tantra'. Thus, the first chapter briefly explained the meaning of all the tantras, and the remaining sixteen chapters will elaborate on it. The second chapter, the first of the sixteen, has two parts: the condensed meaning and the meaning of the branches. The first part also has two aspects: the condensed meaning of the subject matter is that here, only the completion stage is taught out of the two stages mentioned in the first chapter, and even from that, only clear light and union are taught. Even from that, clear light is mainly taught, and union is mentioned incidentally as the manner of its result. The second part, the condensed meaning of the expressing words, is from "Then, the Bhagavan" to "Thus he spoke," which is easy to understand as the words are as they are. Second, the meaning of the branches has six parts: the retinue's supplication, the compiler's connection with words, the teacher's instruction on listening, which shows the characteristics of the mind of enlightenment, the retinue's special praise for it, the six Tathagatas' showing the characteristics of the mind of enlightenment, and again, marveling and special praise. First, the retinue's supplication is: after the completion of the first chapter, immediately after that, "Thus they requested" is added. To whom? To the great Vajradhara, the master of body, speech, and mind. By whom? By all the Tathagatas of the retinue, such as Akshobhya. What did they do? They made outer, inner, and secret offerings and prostrated with their bodies. This shows that, according to the previous practice, the Tathagatas of the retinue, such as Akshobhya, made offerings to the great Vajradhara and supplicated for the meaning of the completion stage. According to the subsequent practice, a person like a jewel, seeking the meaning of the completion stage, should make outer, inner, and secret offerings to the lama and supplicate for the meaning of the completion stage. Calling the teacher "Bhagavan," add "Please explain." What? The unsurpassed mind of enlightenment. And what is it like? It is the nature of the indivisibility of the three bodies and the three minds.

Is the great possessor of the Vajra, the union of two truths. Because of the cause, luminosity, and because the name of the result is closely applied to it, luminosity itself is said to be the supreme of body, speech, and mind. That which is not shown to those who abide in the Kriya Tantra and so forth is secret. Because of that, it is unsurpassed. Because it is completely liberated from all obscurations, it is the essence. The meaning is, in order to generate the body of union, please explain the cause of that, the ultimate bodhicitta, luminosity. Second, connecting with the words of the compiler: After the prayer, the Lord, the master of body, speech, and mind Vajra, knowing that all the Tathagatas of the retinue have prayed, and fully understanding the minds of all the Bodhisattvas, such as those who eliminate obscurations, if the Lord would show the ultimate bodhicitta, luminosity, in order to generate the completely pure deity body for us, it would become a great benefit for sentient beings, thinking thus in his mind, he spoke to those Bodhisattvas as follows. That is to say, according to the followers, if the guru would explain the bodhicitta, luminosity, in order to generate the completely pure union for us disciples, then knowing the thought that the great benefit of accomplishing the perfect result will be achieved, he will explain the nature of the bodhicitta. Third, showing the nature of bodhicitta in the manner of the teacher advising to listen, there are two: The direct meaning is, add "you should generate." The meaning is that one should meditate on the actions including the remainder. Who should meditate? The one who repeats the body Vajra, such as mind like body is body Vajra; the one who repeats the mind Vajra, such as body like mind is mind Vajra; the one who repeats the speech Vajra, such as mind expressed in words is speech Vajra, should also meditate in this way. Having meditated in this way, what should be done? Body, speech, and mind should be truly combined as emptiness like the sky, and made into one. With the collection of the remainder as the leader, meditate on becoming enlightened from suchness.
