bStongs: Accumulated wealth cannot withstand death, nor can one's own bravery withstand death. If one must wander alone in an unfamiliar land, consider with a respectful heart whether all of this is true. I seek the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, may my parents quickly attain the unsurpassed Buddhahood. Thus well spoken, may your heart be at ease. Having spoken thus, the king's heart was saddened, and he said, "That is indeed so," his mind wavered. He severed the attachment to his son, may all your wishes be fulfilled. While wearing a hat, he uttered the sound "kyi hud." Then, the holy prince returned to his home. At dawn, he gathered all the ministers. In order to renounce the kingdom, he began to practice asceticism. His body was naked, the six bone ornaments were clearly visible, and he held a vajra bell, khatvanga, and trident in his hands. As he danced on the top of the palace, many common people gathered to watch the spectacle. (58b) He made a show of dropping the vajra khatvanga, displaying miraculous powers. The powerful and eloquent minister of the demons, named Katama, was the son of Upata. Pretakarama struck the center of the son's head, and the vajra entered the center of his head, causing him to die. The khatvanga struck the mother's heart, causing her to die. Then, the ministers reported to the king: The prince was behaving in a manner inappropriate for enthronement. In the past, it was said that killing the small kings was karmic retribution, and now he has killed the sons and daughters of the ministers. If he is not severely punished according to the law of the kingdom, the king may do similar things again. Please impose the punishment of impaling him on the top of a stake for public display. Thus they reported, and the king was upset and displeased. In order to uphold the law and satisfy the ministers' desires, the king spoke words in accordance with worldly customs: Is this son not human? I do not know if he is an emanation or what, so he cannot be killed, but exiled to the border. Although he was fond of the prince, he had no choice but to exile him because the law of the kingdom was strict. He said in front of all the kings and ministers: From the lotus tree in the center of the precious ocean, an emanation without father or mother was born, a noble body, immaculate and adorned with virtues. Because he was impoverished by his son, he was given the throne. The king's behavior was rough, and he killed the ministers' children. The ministers demanded that he be punished according to the law of the kingdom, and that he be impaled on the top of a stake for public display. (59a) Although they said this, he agreed to exile. Now the prince can leave as he pleases.
