Collected Teachings of the Omniscient Pema Karpo PK281: Explanation of the Four Yogas of Mahamudra - The Eye of Definitive Meaning View 21-376 Explanation of the Four Yogas of Mahamudra - The Eye of Definitive Meaning View The Four Yogas for Establishing the Foundation Explanation of the Four Yogas of Mahamudra - The Eye of Definitive Meaning View. Homage to the venerable Lord of Speech! In the center of the space of E (藏文:ཨེ་,梵文天城体:ए,梵文罗马拟音:e,汉语字面意思:E) is Vam (藏文:ཝཾ,梵文天城体:व,梵文罗马拟音:vam,汉语字面意思:Vam). In the supreme secret place of certainty, I bow to the feet of the glorious Lama who always delights in playing. The co-emergent, innate mind and the objects of knowledge, seeing well as one in pure reality. I pay homage to the Kagyu Lamas who protect beings with the glory of benefit and happiness. The most excellent Dharma of the Buddhas, the profound and vast definitive meaning of the teachings. For those who wish to see it as it is, this Dharma gate is like an eye. In the world of earth and underground, and in the heavens, the most famous and clear, the essence of the profound Dharma of the incomparable Kagyu precious lineage. Desiring to place the secret of the speech of the Four Yogas of Mahamudra in the mindstream of others, therefore: The foundation, practice, experience, discernment of warmth signs, and the fruit, these four yogas are the definitive essence of the path. The four yogas of establishing the foundation, the four yogas of practicing the path, the four yogas of distinguishing the subtleties of experience, the four yogas of distinguishing the warmth signs of the ground and path, the four yogas of manifesting the fruit. These five sets of four are the definitive essence of the path here. Why is the order arranged in this way? The foundation must be established, as such, practice on the path, the path of experience arising from this, how to proceed and connect with manifestation. After establishing the foundation, practice on the path in this way, how does experience arise from this, How do these arisen experiences traverse the ground and path, and how do they relate to the ultimate state of fruition. Now, wishing to explain the first four yogas of establishing the foundation: Because there is no adulteration, because there is no abiding, because there is no contradiction, because there is no clinging, the four are one-pointedness, freedom from elaboration, one taste, and no meditation. The foundation is Mahamudra, or ordinary consciousness.

Or, this spontaneously arising wisdom, because it is not defiled by anything, is the yoga of one-pointedness; because it does not abide anywhere, it is the yoga of non-elaboration; because it does not contradict anything, it is the yoga of one taste; because it does not fixate on anything, it is the yoga of no-meditation. The distinctions of these four yogas have been explained. What is the meaning of 'not defiled'? 'From all aspects, affliction itself and others, called the Dharma of purification, should be removed and placed. Because there is not a bit, it is not defiled.' One's own mind is pure from the beginning, therefore afflictions and conceptual thoughts, etc., all afflictive dharmas, removing what needs to be discarded, or placing other dharmas called purification, that is, there is nothing to add, so it is not defiled. Maitreya said: 'Here, there is nothing to remove, nor is there anything to place.' 'Existence and non-existence, etc., all aggregates are not existent, nor do they abide in the Middle Way, therefore it is called non-abiding.' Mind-essence is the extreme of existence and the extreme of non-existence, completely abandoned. The aggregates of arising and ceasing, etc., are not established as two. Being without beginning, end, and middle, it is called non-abiding because it is the mind-essence of the Middle Way. 'Abandoning existence and non-existence, each to be known by oneself, is called the mind of the Middle Way, it is the nature of non-conceptualization.' 'All dharmas, not other than that, nor are they that. Like all those aspects, because they enter, they are not contradictory.' All dharmas of samsara and nirvana are of the same taste or one in the realm of mind-essence. That very essence also pervades all dharmas like the sky of the Dharma realm following all dharmas, so it is not contradictory. As it is said: 'I pervade all this, I have not seen the self-nature of other beings.' 'For some close expression, even the omniscient ones are impoverished by words, it is not the realm of wisdom, it cannot be described by other metaphors, so it is non-fixating.' For expressing one's own nature as it is, even the perfect Buddhas are impoverished by words, surpassing the realm of speech. It is not touched by the mind of the practitioner, nor is it measured by the subtle wisdom of the speculators. Like the bliss of a young woman, it can only be experienced with the heart, it cannot be compared to other things, it cannot be realized through other external conditions, it can only be known by oneself, so it is non-fixating.' This way is the teaching of glorious Tilopa. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
