And when emptiness arises, it also appears as compassion, so they are inseparable. Here, beginners should not dwell on the past, should not think about the future, and should not judge the present. All thoughts about practicing and not practicing should be completely abandoned, and one should remain in an unfabricated, natural state, without distraction. As the venerable great accomplished Ling said: 'If you leave it unfabricated, realization will arise; if you maintain it like a stream, everything will arise; completely abandon all aims and characteristics, O yogi, always remain in equanimity.' If it does not stay like that and scatters, it should be cut off and stopped immediately. If it continues like that, it will scatter greatly, and once you have grasped the mind, you will know the gateway of arising thoughts. The glorious archer said: 'If it is bound, it will try to go in ten directions.' Therefore, one should let thoughts rest as they please and focus diligently on not being distracted by mindfulness. By doing so, thoughts will not scatter but will abide, as he himself said: 'If released, it will abide steadfastly without moving. I perceive it to be like an overturned mule.' Then, this key point of entering into equipoise is needed: do not fabricate anything on top of whatever arises, but make that itself the essence of meditation. As it is said: 'This mind that is bound by a knot, if released, there is no doubt that it will be liberated.' In Gyepa Dorje (dgyes pa rdo rje): 'Whatever unbearable actions of beings, by whatever they are bound, if with skillful means, by that very means, one will be liberated from the bonds of existence.' Furthermore, it is also said: 'Purifying thoughts with thoughts.' At those times, the key is to adjust the way of looking, recognize awareness, if (thoughts) become active, relax; if (thoughts) become dull, eliminate them with the fierce power of the awareness warrior. If disturbing thoughts do not arise, then one should diligently meditate on the union of emptiness and compassion as explained above. The second part includes: discerning the nature of the mind, and discerning appearances. First is: observing what the nature of the mind that abides in this way is like. If you are certain that it is clear and empty, then observe the nature of how it flows. And, observe whether it is dualistic or non-dualistic with the mind. If it is dualistic, how do you observe it? If it is non-dualistic, how does it flow? How does it abide? If you observe clarity and emptiness, you will understand that the knowing subject and the self-illuminating clear light and the emptiness as the object are inseparable. Then, if you observe whether the nature of the mind is born or dies, permanent or impermanent, comes or goes, different or the same, you will understand that it transcends the realm of conceptual elaboration. If you directly realize this, you have entered the ground of the Great Vehicle. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My master, the Kagyu Rinpoche, father and sons, also say this. Second, all appearances are one's own mind. As the Vajra Tentra says: 'Therefore, all dharmas should be realized as one's own mind.' In general, appearances undergo many changes depending on the basis on which they rely, such as dreams, illusions, and direct perception. These are all illusory appearances and experiential appearances, but all of these are not separate from one's own mind. Therefore, just as a bowl of water is seen differently by the six realms of beings, but in reality, it itself does not change. Similarly, for the same person, an enemy will generate hatred when they see them, relatives will generate attachment, and neutral people will feel calm. These are all the separate attachments of their own minds. As Lord Maitripa said: 'All dharmas are one's own mind, seeing external objects as real is an illusion. Like a dream, its essence is empty.' Therefore, appearances appear as such, and their essence is also emptiness. If emptiness is explained as non-cessation, then that is ignorance of the true reality. If it is determined that objects do not exist, then attachment to objects will disappear. If the emptiness of purifying attachments is explained as truly existent, that is only a consideration for not abandoning reality, but the way of appearance does not surpass the former. As the Yoga Lord Wazra Dorje (Smiling Vajra) said: 'In the ultimate truth, there is no obstacle, nor is there a Buddha.' Similarly, the wise who realize this principle do not see consciousness, but see wisdom.' Here, it refers to the union of emptiness that possesses all perfections and unchanging great bliss. Finally, there is the guidance of virtuous conduct. The final guidance of virtuous conduct is: dedication. Placing the dedication, the object of dedication, etc., in a state free from the attachment to the three spheres. As it is said: 'Attachment to the three spheres of dedication is worldly.' Therefore, there must be a cause for dedication—virtue; a place for dedication—achieving Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings; and words of dedication—the immaculate teachings of the Buddhas, such as the 'Samantabhadra's Prayer' and so on. These are all to be done in situations such as rising from meditation. Therefore, this catalog of essential points of explanation is a good explanation for determining the ultimate meaning, and should not be used by anyone other than those with the capacity, so be sure to keep it secret! Understand the profound and vast teachings of the Buddha and truly realize them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
