Collected Teachings of Omniscient Pema Karpo, PK277, entitled 'The Fivefold Great Seal Guidance: A Sheaf of Mind'. 'The Fivefold Great Seal Guidance: A Sheaf of Mind' First, the Auspicious Guidance. 'The Fivefold Great Seal Guidance: A Sheaf of Mind'. Great Seal). 'The Fivefold Great Seal Guidance: A Sheaf of Mind', I prostrate to Phagmo Drupa and the Gling lineage masters and disciples. Neither existent, nor nonexistent, neither both, nor neither, Free from the four extremes, emptiness with the essence of compassion. Well-spoken sacred Dharma, proclaimed loudly and clearly, Rescuing beings from the realms of existence, I pay homage to all. Unprecedented words are not mentioned here, The authentic transmission is without error, Through the power of blessings from previous practice, it is found. It is bestowed upon the fruit of vast accumulation of merit in the past. The eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, with concise words, are clearly imprinted in the minds of disciples. The vajra words, sharp and decisive, free from doubt, lead those with the potential to the state of enlightenment in this lifetime. This is the essential instruction. This is the special characteristic of the Sugata Jewel Khampa. Now, the explanation of the Fivefold Great Seal Guidance will be given in three parts: first, the auspicious guidance, (middle, the auspicious guidance,) and finally, the auspicious guidance. The first part includes the common preliminaries and the uncommon preliminaries. First, the common preliminaries, which have four aspects: the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments. The cause is maintaining ethical conduct, therefore obtaining this human body as a result is very difficult. Why? Because those who keep it are very few. Its essence is the eight freedoms and ten endowments. Freedom from the eight unfavorable conditions is leisure. Five endowments of oneself and five of others, totaling ten. The human body is the basis for humans. A jewel because it is rare, valuable, powerful, and in accordance with the Dharma. Impermanence: From the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, look at each part of your body. What is permanent? Look at the external environment, houses, wealth, etc. What is indestructible and truly existent? Each moment changes, therefore getting closer to death. When death will occur is uncertain. As the noble son of the Victorious One, Bhadrapāla, said: 'Even today, there is no certainty of not dying, yet one always makes plans to stay for a long time. At the time of death, there is a danger of the chest and limbs flailing.' As Jetsun Milarepa said: 'Years and months fall like rain, days and meals pound like drops. The house of the illusory body is about to collapse.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘The gathering of death's dewdrops, hoping it will stay, even if it stays, it's just a brief wipe.’ That's what it means. Meditating repeatedly like this, contemplating the law of karma, practicing the ten virtues, one can temporarily attain higher realms, and ultimately attain the cause of Buddhahood. While creating the ten non-virtuous deeds, including their causes and effects, will lead to the three lower realms, and all the sufferings of the higher realms. The faults of samsara are: wherever you are, there is suffering; whoever you associate with, there is suffering; whatever you do, there is suffering, and only suffering and its causes, there is no moment of happiness. As Mipham Gonpo said: ‘Even in a place as small as the tip of a needle in samsara, there will never be happiness.’ The only eternal happiness is nirvana. Secondly, generating Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind), meditating on the Iṣṭadevatā (supreme deity), Guru Yoga (the yoga of the master). First, these three are Mahāmudrā (the great seal), which is to determine the ultimate meaning. If someone says that it is not reasonable to explain it in the front, then there is no fault. Because the order of these yogas needs to be meditated on, and it is related to the meaning of the right reason with characteristics, so it is explained in the front. And determining its ultimate meaning, Mahāmudrā, has no other difference from the main text that will be explained. Therefore, taking refuge in the Three Jewels as a prerequisite, generating Bodhicitta, and diligently practicing all that should be learned. Meditating here is the wish of the previous masters. Meditate on loving-kindness, hoping that all sentient beings have happiness and the cause of happiness. If you can't achieve greatness from the beginning, then meditate on your own mother in front of you, hoping that she can attain happiness, that is, nirvana, and hoping that she has the cause of happiness, that is, practicing good roots. If you are proficient in this, then meditate on compassion, hoping that she can get rid of suffering, that is, samsara, and hoping that she can get rid of all the causes of suffering, that is, non-virtuous deeds. These two start with the mother first, then the close and beloved friends, and finally all sentient beings. Regarding compassion, there are three sayings: that is, compassion for sentient beings, compassion for Dharma, and compassion without object. In short, the three stages in Bodhicaryāvatāra are: ‘First is self’, clinging to self, ‘mine’, developing attachment to things, ‘like a waterwheel’, unable to be autonomous, ‘salute to those who have compassion for sentient beings’. ‘The movement of beings is like the moon in the water’, ‘moving and self-nature’. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
