Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Garpo PK19: Naro's Secret Conduct - The Order of Practice 17-526 ༄༅། །Naro's Secret Conduct - The Order of Practice ༄། །The Distinction of the Preliminary Cause - Auspicious and Complete ༄༅། །Naro's Secret Conduct - The Order of Practice. Homage to glorious Naropa! Here, as I explain this profound instruction on the secret conduct of reversal meditation, I will discuss the four aspects: where to go, when to go, who goes, and how to conduct oneself. 17-527 First, I will explain where to go. As it says in the 'Equal Taste' text: 'Mountains, crossroads, single trees, riverbanks, great plains, likewise secluded remote places, mountain valleys and peaks, lotus groves that are delightful, ponds, shores, and lands, dense caves and ocean shores, great charnel grounds that are primordially pure, at night in the homes of the Matrikas, the mantra practitioner should meditate there, auspiciously.' One should go to these places. Furthermore, one should go to places where many people have died, places where great battles have been fought, and places where fierce worldly gods and demons reside. In short, one should go to places that ordinary people cannot go to even during the day, places that are frightening and terrifying. Second, when to go? As it says in the Sambhuti Tantra: 'When the Vajra Sun sets, then begin the practice.' And as it says in the 'Equal Taste' text: 'Travel secretly at night.' Thus, one should go to the place of secret conduct in the evening after sunset, without being noticed by others. In the early morning, one should return to one's own place without being noticed by others. If it is an uninhabited wilderness, one should stay there until the practice is complete. 17-528 Third, who goes? As it says in the 'Equal Taste' text: 'When a little warmth is obtained, then begin the conduct.' Thus, it should be someone who has perfected the conduct of Samantabhadra, who knows that appearances are mind, and who has purified the clinging to external phenomena as gods and demons. Fourth, how to conduct oneself? This is divided into three aspects: the distinction of the preliminary cause being auspicious and complete, the main part of cutting off self-grasping with the reversal meditation of emptiness, and the subsequent part of gathering gods and demons to be tamed with the reversal meditation of compassion. First, I will explain the distinction of the preliminary cause being auspicious and complete, that is, what clothes to wear, what ornaments to adorn oneself with, and so on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is worn as clothing? What is eaten as food? Who is taken as a companion? Generating the mind for supreme enlightenment, offering the body to the Lama (Guru) and praying, requesting empowerment from the Yidam deity, there are seven aspects. First, what is worn as clothing? In the Root Tantra of Ro Nyon, it says: 'The garment of a corpse is worn as clothing, the ashes of a corpse are smeared. With a mind free from attachment, wear faded old cloth.' As the scripture says, wearing corpse clothing, smearing the ashes of a burned corpse on the body, wearing faded black old cloth, etc. In short, wearing tattered clothes that do not generate attachment even if they are snatched away by others. Second, what is worn as ornaments? The scripture says: 'Adorn with strings of Gujana and other fruits.' As the scripture says, adorn with strings of fruits such as the Gujana tree. In short, adorn with the fruits of trees. Here, adorning with the fruits of trees is a substitute for bone ornaments, the purpose being to be equal to the heroes and Dakinis. Third, what is eaten as food? The scripture says: 'Food is half of immortality.' As the scripture says, food is the five meats, and drink is the five elixirs. The purpose of this is to achieve immortality, to attain the Vidyadhara (knowledge holder) of deathless life. If the five meats and five elixirs cannot be obtained, then eat whatever food is encountered. Fourth, who is taken as a companion? The scripture says: 'Extremely beautiful, with bright eyes, possessing her own empowerment, full of compassion. Taking this Vajra maiden, the ascetic should practice.' As the scripture says, if one is entering the path of desire, one should proceed together with the Karma Mudra (consort); if one is entering the path of liberation, one should proceed together with the good experience of emptiness. Fifth, generating the mind for enlightenment: The scripture says: 'For the sake of benefiting sentient beings, the wise should wander.' As the scripture says, for the benefit of all sentient beings, in order to attain perfect Buddhahood, for this purpose, one should practice the profound instructions of secret conduct and reversal meditation. Sixth, offering the body to the Lama and praying: The scripture says: 'Manjushri Vajra grants me empowerment.' As the scripture says, visualize the kind root Guru on one's own crown, and from the Guru's head upwards, visualize the Lamas of the secret conduct lineage residing in a tiered manner. Offer one's own body along with all enjoyments to them, and especially offer this very body of oneself without reservation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
