Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Karpo PK164: Condensed Commentary on the Root Tantra of Vajra Tummo, Revealing the Secret - Called 'Essence of Secrets' Condensed Commentary on the Root Tantra of Vajra Tummo, Revealing the Secret - Called 'Essence of Secrets' Name of the Teaching and Introduction to the Method of Teaching Condensed Commentary on the Root Tantra of Vajra Tummo, Revealing the Secret - Called 'Essence of Secrets' I prostrate with all reverence, touching the lotus feet of Jetsun Ngakwang Chökyi Gyalpo. May the lama, the ornament of bliss-arising, protect me, who does not waver from the ocean of vast learning, whose boundless thought is tireless, and who brings forth the treasure of eloquent nectar. After the Sugatas spoke, you subdued everything as the master of the three secrets. The great powers of existence could not bear it, and they entered into servitude by your forceful command. The great arrogant thief was enraged again, but you trampled him with your feet, and his life was taken. Praise to the great lord of power, the holder of the vajra. The king of tantras, the creeper of sandalwood, is mostly distorted by obtaining leaves. We have a good axe of discernment; what else should we do but extract the essence? Here, we will explain the oral instructions of the successive glorious Drukpa Vajradharas, the quintessence of the five methods of accomplishment, and this great root tantra of the power of Vajra Tummo. It is divided into three parts: the name of the teaching, the introduction to the method of teaching, and the establishment of the teaching text. First, the name of the teaching: In Sanskrit: Bhagavan Vajrapani Guhya Bhivrita Tantra Raja Nama. In Tibetan: བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ཕྱག་ན་རྡོ་རྗེ་གསང་བ་མངོན་པར་བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱུད་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཞེས་བྱ་བ། (English: The King of Tantras, Revealing the Secret of the Bhagavan Vajrapani). Homage to the glorious lord of secrets, Vajrapani. Second, the introduction to the method of teaching: It shows the perfection of the five aspects, namely, 'Thus I have heard at one time,' which is the perfection of time. 'Bhagavan' is the perfection of the teacher. As stated in many tantras, Bhagavan Vairochana corresponds to Manjushri, Amitabha corresponds to Avalokiteshvara, Akshobhya corresponds to Vajrapani, and so does Vajrasattva. The teacher of this tantra is the latter, with Vajrapani Bodhisattva as the questioner. Also, as stated in the Hevajra Tantra: 'The speaker is me, the Dharma is also me, and the audience with retinue is me.' Thus, upon analysis, the questioner is the teacher, the Dharma is the teacher, and the retinue and time are also the teacher.

The location is in the palace of the Willow Grove (Tibetan: ལྕང་ལོ་ཅན་གྱི་ཕོ་བྲང་, meaning: the palace with willows). It is said that in the eight directions outside the Thirty-three (Tibetan: སུམ་ཅུ་རྩ་གསུམ, meaning: Thirty-three) peaks of Mount Meru (Tibetan: རི་རབ, meaning: Mount Meru), five hundred yakshas (Tibetan: གནོད་སྦྱིན, Sanskrit Devanagari: yakṣa, Sanskrit Romanization: yakṣa, literal meaning: yaksha) holding vajras reside, which is known as Rodan (Tibetan: རོ་ལྡན, meaning: endowed with taste). Among them, the northeast direction is considered the main palace. Upon careful analysis, this is no different from Akanishta (Tibetan: འོག་མིན, meaning: Akanishta), which is said to manifest Buddha-fields as numerous as dust particles on a single particle. The retinue consists of gatherings of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, as well as gatherings of Bodhisattvas such as Maitreya (Tibetan: བྱམས་པ, meaning: Maitreya), countless gatherings of Vidyarajas (Tibetan: ཁྲོ་བོ, meaning: wrathful deities), gatherings of devas and asuras (Tibetan: ལྷ་མ་སྲིན, meaning: devas and asuras), and five hundred yakshas, etc. This is how it is described in the scriptures. The Dharma is when the four perfections (Tibetan: ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ་བཞི, meaning: four perfections) are complete, it is the time to teach this tantra. Therefore, the Teacher abides in the samadhi called 'Destroying All Demons' (Tibetan: བདུད་ཐམས་ཅད་འཇོམས་པ, meaning: destroying all demons). The real beginning is like this: Due to the power of the Teacher abiding in samadhi, Vajrapani (Tibetan: ཕྱག་ན་རྡོ་རྗེ, meaning: Vajrapani) arose from the retinue, draped his upper garment over his shoulder, prostrated, and said: 'O Secret Vajra Holder (Tibetan: གསང་བའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན, meaning: Secret Vajra Holder),' etc. This request is what initiates the topic. Due to this entreaty, the Teacher arose from the samadhi and shook the vajra (Tibetan: རྡོ་རྗེ, Sanskrit Devanagari: vajra, Sanskrit Romanization: vajra, literal meaning: vajra) of indivisible five wisdoms three times at his heart. When the vajra was shaken, the entire world trembled, shook, and swayed, etc., and eighteen great signs of earthquakes appeared, emitting light called 'Subduing the Malicious Nagas' (Tibetan: གདུག་པ་ཅན་ཀླུ་འདུལ་བ, meaning: subduing the malicious nagas), which then dissolved back into his heart. From the center of the vajra, the consort Vajravarahi (Tibetan: རྡོ་རྗེ་བདེ་མ, meaning: Vajravarahi) arose. She circumambulated the Teacher three times to the right, then folded her palms and prostrated, saying: 'What is the secret of your body, speech, and mind (Tibetan: སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས, meaning: body, speech, and mind)? Please, Vajra Holder, explain in detail. This is a rare great tantra, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, arising from countless gatherings, from the compassionate nature of emptiness, please, Bhagavan, explain.' After this request, the Teacher smiled and emitted light called 'Maitreya's Emanation' (Tibetan: བྱམས་པ་རྣམ་པར་འཕྲུལ་པ, meaning: Maitreya's Emanation), pervading the entire world, and then gathered it back and dissolved it into his face. Then he said: 'Vajravarahi, you are the selfless one of the nature of emptiness, I will explain as you have requested, please listen respectfully and remember well.' Thus he agreed. This is the first request, for the sake of taming those to be tamed by skillful means. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
