Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Karpo PK113: Reply to Geshe Namgyal Drakpa Reply to Geshe Namgyal Drakpa This is presented to the esteemed Geshe Namgyal Drakpa, who speaks of scripture and reason, accompanied by a painting by Tashi, a golden auspicious symbol, and a silk cover. The attendant overcame the dangers of the Tsang River and arrived from Ramto, which pleased me. You are well-versed in the tradition of Panchen Chökyi Gyalpo, and have perfected the teaching and learning, instructing well in the midst of the Karma Kamtsang assembly, and reside steadfastly in that Dharma school. Now, you have asked questions based on my conduct, which I take as a compliment. Criticizing others is not the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Arrogance in thinking oneself superior and acting accordingly is also seen as similar to the former. But now you have studied the Dharma, and with a broad view, you raise such questions. I thought it inappropriate to remain silent. Therefore, I speak frankly about what others say, my conduct, and whether it aligns with the tradition of Shakyamuni Buddha, for your consideration. If I didn't write down your words, what would I be answering? You might think. So, I have written down your words and am responding: With the light of knowledge, pervading all that is to be known; with the compassion of love, gathering beings under control; with power, destroying all the pride of evil opponents. To the son of the Victorious One, the sprout of the Victorious One, I speak without deceit or pretense, to cut through your own doubts and the web of uncertainty. I have heard of your fame and reputation, and I have also heard conflicting reports. It is said that you are the reincarnation of Panchen Naropa, and that you have acknowledged it yourself. There may be other reasons. If we consider the biography of Lorepa and the Kagyu seal, Guru Padmasambhava said: 'Khenpo Bodhisattva, in the future you will become Naropa, then Tsangpa Gyare, and then you will benefit beings as a king.' The king is considered a Dharma king. If you acknowledge being his reincarnation, then some say: 'No authentic Dharma has emerged from the treasures, everything is false.' And others say that to prove themselves great and to denigrate others, they cite these prophecies from treasure texts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-529

12-529 If not, I respect the old and new treasures of the Nyingma school. I examine the fake treasures and remain neutral. Therefore, it is appropriate to quote (the treasures). For example, in the 'Three Essential Statements' (sa ral zhes bya'i lung gsum mdor) of Dharma Lord Gyare (Chos rje rGya ras la): 'An emanation holding a jewel will appear, and he will preach the Dharma from the mouth of a stone like a dice.' This is a prophecy about Avalokiteśvara, from the treasure text of Choswang (chos dbang). Furthermore, in many Kang treasure and Southern treasure texts, there are prophecies about Nāropa. Zhang Yudrakpa (zhang gYu brag pas) of the Kagyu school himself said: 'Who else but me would cut Nāropa's hair?' He rode a white old mare and ran, which is generally considered a sign of accomplishment. Similarly, in the praise of Thel (thel), the seat of Lingrepa (gling Ras), it says: 'A ray of light appeared from the center of the forehead, that light is the great Lingrepa, and from the center of the light appeared another light, that light is the great Paṇḍita Nāropa.' Listing them all would be tedious. Tsangpa Gyare (gTsang pa rGya ras) himself said: 'Before the four births, in the south of the Kashmir region, in a city called Kosala, I was born there, not a heretic, but of the Brahmin caste. At that time, my name was Yeshe Dondrup (ye shes dngos grub).' He himself admitted that he was Nāropa. Here it also says that eighty out of the eighty-four accomplished ones are his descendants. In the prophecy of the lineage of emanations, the first one mentioned is Gyalwang Rinpoche (rGyal dbang rJe), which has many bases. 12-530 His emanation was once reborn as a bird, namely Som Nyima (som Nyi ma). I was examined and recognized as his emanation by Paṇḍita Tashi Namgyal (paNDi ta bKra shis rNam rgyal) and others. In particular, Drukpa Rinpoche ('brug pa rin po che), who possesses the Vajra Dharma Eye (rdo rje chos kyi spyan ldan), specially prayed to the Three Jewels for a month for this very purpose, and received an infallible prophecy. He also claimed to be him when he was young. Now, it is enough to say 'yes' to those who believe it and 'no' to those who don't, without having to bother to prove it. Moreover, you yourself said: 'If he admits to being his reincarnation, then some others may think: Those holy beings, whether reincarnations or emanations, should protect the Dharma and sentient beings, how could they engage in such licentious behavior? This is simply treating harm as Dharma and deceiving sentient beings!' If one develops wrong views towards holy beings, then denying their existence is like cutting off the root. Thinking that there is no good or evil is a wrong view.' Therefore, one should restrain the desires in one's own mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
