Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Karpo, PK44: Explanation of the Noble Maitreya's Prayer: Showing the Clear Intent of Asanga 7-355 Explanation of the Noble Maitreya's Prayer: Showing the Clear Intent of Asanga Homage to the Holy Lama! Maitreya pours down nectar rain, Uproots all diseases of ignorance, Great Physician, Lord of Gods, I bow a hundred times in homage. By the tongue of the King of Conquerors, Served as attendant, all this Ananda, As renowned in the assembly of hearers, I will explain to the five hundred. Maitreya, because of his surpassing love for all sentient beings. Because it is his prayer, and even mere intention is called a prayer, to distinguish it from other prayers, it is called 'King,' meaning the collection of Bodhisattva's practices and vows. 7-356 Therefore, in explaining this 'Noble Maitreya's Prayer King,' there are three parts: introduction, prayer, and conclusion. First is the introduction: Ananda, when the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya was practicing the Bodhisattva path in the past, three times during the day and three times during the night, he would expose his right shoulder, place his right knee on the ground, join his palms, and recite this prayer. From the ultimate meaning, Noble Maitreya is the regent, the Tushita Bodhisattva, the one who will attain Buddhahood in one lifetime. In this regard, it is called 'past.' It is said that this refers to the time shortly after he generated Bodhicitta. From the true meaning, after he attains Buddhahood in Akanishta, he emanates in Tushita, and has not yet come to this world to show enlightenment. At that time, 'past' refers to the stage when the Bodhisattva is studying. Preliminary Prostrations Secondly, it is divided into the preliminary prostrations and the prayers made. First is the preliminary prostrations: The object of prostration is the Three Jewels, among which the Buddha Jewel is: 7-357 I prostrate to all Buddhas! 'All' refers to all Buddhas who have appeared, are currently living, and will appear in the future, all as the object of prostration. The Sangha Jewel is: I prostrate to the sages with divine eyes, that is, the assembly of Bodhisattvas who have attained the six superknowledges. Also, I prostrate to the Shravakas. I prostrate to the four pairs and eight types of noble beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sangha is the community (དགེ་འདུན།). Prostration is paying homage with body, speech, and mind united. The sacred Dharma is of two types: the provisional meaning, which leads to good rebirths, and the ultimate meaning, which causes rebirths to cease. The former averts the path of the lower realms. The lower realms refer to the three lower destinies. Its path refers to non-virtue. Averting it means abandoning all sins. The path of higher realms fully reveals. Higher realms refer to humans and gods, vessels of liberation. Its path is to practice purely and perfectly with two types of activities, which is called the path of higher realms. The ultimate meaning causes rebirths to cease, which is without aging and death. Without aging and death is Nirvana. Nirvana is divided into peaceful Nirvana and non-abiding Nirvana. Guide, I prostrate to the Bodhicitta. Guiding there refers to the stages of the path to go there. That is, a Shravaka generates the mind of Bodhi, a Pratyekabuddha generates the mind of Bodhi, and the unsurpassed Bodhi generates the mind of Bodhi, all of which lead to their respective Bodhis. This is called the definitive path. Aspiration to uphold the sacred Dharma of all Buddhas: The second part includes: aspiration to uphold the sacred Dharma of all Buddhas, and the complete dedication of the practices of Bodhisattvas who accomplish this. First is upholding the first Dharma, because the mind is the master. As stated in the 'Sutra of Purifying All Karmic Obscurations': 'Bhikkhus, what do you think? When the mind is defiled, beings are defiled; when the mind is purified, beings are purified.' This shows that Samsara or Nirvana depends on the mind. In Samsara, the arising of bad or good rebirths, the power of sins or merits, good or bad, all depend on thought. Āryadeva said: 'Therefore, the root of merit and sin lies in intention.' In the Vinaya it says: 'All dharmas are preceded by mind, mind is the chief.' And in the Abhidharma: 'The variety of the world arises from karma, from thought and what is done by it.' Whatever sins I have committed, I confess before the Buddhas. I will confess these sins. Therefore, if you want not to fall into bad rebirths, you must confess past sins and vow not to commit them again, so confession is necessary. This needs to be done through the four powers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
