Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Karpo PK26: A Treasure of Wonders, Briefly Describing the Extraordinary Qualities of the Great Monastery of Ralung 4-172 A Treasure of Wonders, Briefly Describing the Extraordinary Qualities of the Great Monastery of Ralung Four Extraordinary Qualities Based on External Location A Treasure of Wonders, Briefly Describing the Extraordinary Qualities of the Great Monastery of Ralung Shraya Sastu! To the lotus feet of all the incarnations of the noble Avalokiteśvara, known throughout the three realms as the glorious Drukpa Rinpoche, past, present, and future, with all reverence, I prostrate! The view of mind itself, like the mirror of the sky, Empowers one to the state of omniscience. The king of Dharma in three times, prophesied, The source of benefit and happiness, to that one I bow. A place of accomplishment, like a full moon, The eyes of generosity, gazing upon the upright. Its nature and demeanor, like the son of a compassionate wealth deity, The painting of which, is it not the glory of the ocean of the Buddha's teachings? 4-173 Here, through taming, the power of accomplishment is obtained, Delighting in accepting the medicine of others. Without reason, kind and gentle to me, To abandon this excellent place is foolish. Circling this place once separates one from the fears of unbearable samsara, Like writing on stone, the holy ones have promised. May all who possess wisdom and hold treasures, Come here and celebrate the feast of all good deeds. This is the place of reverence for all beings in the world, including gods, The object of offering, the sacred field for accumulating merit. This is the great monastery of Ralung Thel, the great monastery of complete accomplishment. It is renowned for thirteen extraordinary qualities. These thirteen extraordinary qualities are: four extraordinary qualities based on external location, four extraordinary qualities based on the three inner supports, four extraordinary qualities based on secret teachings, holders of the teachings, etc., and one extraordinary quality that it is the source of all benefit and happiness, totaling thirteen. The first four are observations of the external site: the land where it is located, the deities there, the reason for the name, and the blessings of holy beings. The first of these is: the foundation of this great monastery is like an eight-petaled lotus flower in full bloom. 4-174 Surrounded by mountains of snow, red rock, She, and grassland, as if in prostration. Hundreds of streams flow into it, and the shape of the snow is like that. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its topography is like an eight-spoked wheel. It is decorated with the Eight Auspicious Symbols: like the mountain in front of the practice site, shaped like a white conch shell spiraling to the right; the top of the mountain is like a jeweled umbrella; the incense burning platform is like a vase filled to the brim; the mountain beside the Tsangchu River is like an erected victory banner; the Yanggon back mountain and the scene of golden fish playing in front of it; the plain in front of the temple gate is like a golden wheel turning; the mountain in the Phentang direction is like an open lotus flower, with small streams flowing, like two birds facing each other; Jiamonaka Mountain is shaped like an auspicious knot. Relying on such a special terrain, this practice site was established. From this auspicious beginning, countless practice centers upholding the essential teachings have emerged in the snowy land of Tibet. As Dharma Lord said: 'If I build a monastery in Ngamshö, it will be famous; if I build it in Kyishong, it will be crowded with followers; if I build it in Khule Namthi, it will be wealthy, but it will not benefit the teachings much. If I build it here, the teachings of the practice lineage will become like the midday sun.' The excellence of this place is comparable to the geographical importance of Lhasa. Secondly, behind this great practice monastery, the range of snow mountains from Oma Thang to Dala is known as 'Yixinorbu Sangbu' (Virtuous Jewel). The reason is that, in order to protect the teachings of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra and the Buddhas of this fortunate aeon, the son of Gana, the king of protectors, was born as Norbu Sangbu. His name is Virtuous Jewel. He holds the vajra of the power of all Buddhas in his hand and is authorized as the lord of all secrets, hence he is also called Secret Lord Vajrapani. Such a great Bodhisattva, in order to suppress the evil demons and ghosts of Tibet, resides here in manifestation. Therefore, this place has great blessings, is auspicious and attractive. His father, Gana, also held a grand ceremony in front of the Ha'o Snow Mountain, making this place the source of wealth for the entire Tibetan region, like placing a wish-fulfilling jewel on top of a victory banner, which is particularly excellent. Thirdly, this place was originally named 'Drong Khule', later because a manifested white ewe was lost by a shepherd during the day, and was finally found at the site of today's Jokhang Temple. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
