Oh, Khenpo Paden Dondrup's Teachings NPD8: 'The Clear Light of the Ultimate Path, Instructions on Recognizing the Bardo' 'The Clear Light of the Ultimate Path, Instructions on Recognizing the Bardo' To be done in conjunction with other rituals 'The Clear Light of the Ultimate Path, Instructions on Recognizing the Bardo' Namo Guru Padaya. By the royal method of the vast armies of the two accumulations, having utterly vanquished the inexhaustible battlefield of the two obscurations, the supreme teacher who commands the wealth of the two bodies that arise from below, I prostrate to the chief of the two-legged. For beings who wander completely in existence other than the six realms, to speak of the sacred Dharma, as it arises from the mind, speech, and interpretations, may you listen with joy to the well-spoken words. After the prostration and the commitment to explain, what is to be explained is the arrangement to benefit sentient beings abiding in the bardo. For them, it is permissible to do this from the time when the body and consciousness have separated until forty-nine days, and neither earlier nor later. Earlier is not permissible because they have entered the clear light and cannot be recognized; later is not permissible because they have already taken another rebirth, and this method will not benefit them. Therefore, having determined the time of abiding in the bardo, there are two ways to introduce their situation: to be done in conjunction with other rituals, and the manner of doing it in other circumstances. The first is: the teacher should not look to material gain and should possess great compassion, and when the occasion arises, should say these words: 'Oh, deceased so-and-so, please listen. Our teacher, the King of the Shakyas, in the Sutra of Vast Play, said: 'The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds; the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance; the life of beings is like lightning in the sky; it goes swiftly like water flowing down a steep mountain.' Therefore, all of the three realms are of the nature of impermanence. In particular, the life of beings is impermanent like autumn clouds, the gestures of a dancer, lightning, and water flowing down a steep mountain. Therefore, your life, karma, and merit have been exhausted, the appearances of this life have ceased, and now you are in the bardo. I will introduce to you the reality of the bardo as it is described in the pure scriptures, which must be determined in seven points: the essence of the bardo, its names, which realm and where to be reborn, how the body and so forth abide, how its visions are approached, and the measure of its lifespan.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the first point is from the *Abhidharmakośa*: 'Here, what dies and is born arises between existences.' Therefore, it is called 'Bardo' because it exists as a physical support between the death-existence and the birth-existence. Therefore, please recognize the Bardo through the physical support, and abandon the thought of eagerly seeking rebirth, generating the aspiration to attain the body of a Tathagata adorned with excellent marks. The second point is from the *Abhidharmakośa*: 'Mind-born, seeking existence, feeding on scents, and intermediate existence.' Therefore, the names for your current state are: 'Mind-born' because it arises from the cause of your own mind; 'Seeking existence' because it has the nature of seeking rebirth; 'Feeding on scents' because it goes for scents and lives on scents; 'Intermediate existence' because it exists between birth and death; and 'Intermediate existence' because it is the cause of the manifestation of birth. Recognize the Bardo through these names, and do not cling to any name of 'existence' that boasts of being good, but generate a strong desire to be liberated from it. The third point is from the *Abhidharmakośa*: 'Born by transformation in the intermediate existence.' And the *Sutra of Seven Existences* says: 'There are seven existences: the existence of hell, the existence of animals, the existence of hungry ghosts, the existence of gods, the existence of humans, the existence of karma, and the intermediate existence.' Furthermore, the treatise composed by the venerable Maudgalyāyana's son says: 'The four modes of birth include the five realms of existence, but the five realms of existence do not include the four modes of birth.' What is not included? It is the intermediate existence.' Therefore, your body is born by transformation from the four modes of birth, and it does not belong to any of the six of the five realms of existence, it is the birth of 'existence,' so recognize the Bardo through the four modes of birth, etc., and in the future, do not be attached to the birth-places of samsara and the distinctions of the realms of existence, but generate the desire to be happy in the company of the noble ones in a pure land. The fourth point is from the *Abhidharmakośa*: 'Because it is of one realm, it has the form of the previous existence.' And the *Compendium of Topics* says: 'It has the form of where it will be born.' Therefore, it will take on the form of whichever of the six realms it will be born into. Furthermore, the *Abhidharmakośa* says: 'All faculties are complete.' That is, the faculties of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body are complete. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
