A Collection of Instructions by Khedrup Ngawang Lekpa NL12: The Nectar of the Fortunate Heart, Summarizing the Essence of the View of the Inseparability of Samsara and Nirvana Homage to Jamyang Lama! Grant the wisdom to see the profound nature of reality. Regarding this, the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) masters have explained many different conventional views. If all these are collected, they can be summarized into two: the coarse outer Madhyamaka and the subtle inner Madhyamaka. The first is: to accept the view of the Prasangika Madhyamaka (Consequentialist Middle Way) literally, as the Svātantrika (Autonomist) school does. It is said that this tenet should be held when explaining the teachings of great treatises and when major debates arise. The second is: to establish all external appearances as mind, and to ultimately settle that mind in a state free from elaboration. It is said that this is mainly practiced when engaging in yoga in solitary places. In this regard, Jowo Rinpoche (Atiśa) said: 'To refute opponents, and to explain the teachings of great treatises, and when major debates arise, one should speak of the tenets of the coarse Madhyamaka. One should mainly value that, and when engaging in yoga practice, one should meditate on the subtle yoga. This is a personal instruction.' The details can be found in Jowo Rinpoche's own *Lamp for the Path of Enlightenment*, which explains the scriptural sources, and in *Ornament of the Wisdom of the Forefathers*. Therefore, it is said that the view of the inseparability of samsara and nirvana in our own system is in accordance with this latter view. How to meditate on this is as follows: First, as it appears in the instruction manuals, one should establish, through scripture, reasoning, and pith instructions, that all phenomena included in appearance, existence, samsara, and nirvana are merely manifestations of one's own mind, and that there is not even a single phenomenon that exists apart from the mind. First, the scriptural evidence: In the *Ten Bhumi Sutra* it says: 'Oh sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind.' In the *Vajra Ghanta Tantra* it says: 'Apart from the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no person. The objects of consciousness have no external existence whatsoever.' In the *Treasury of Reasoning* it says: 'The appearing object is mind itself. These appearances are not external. Based on the stability or instability of the imprints, one makes the distinction between true and false.' There are many such quotes. As for reasoning: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Because they are different, it is considered unaccomplished.' Just as a bowl full of water appears differently to the six realms of beings, it is known that appearances are not truly existent external objects. That appearances are not truly existent external objects is also proven by experience. In the past, a great practitioner of the preliminary path and its fruition, due to the activity of the channels and winds, experienced thirst. When he wanted to drink water, he could not see water in the waterhole, spring, or river, and therefore became doubtful. So he hung his Dharma robe on a tree on the opposite bank of the river and lay down to rest. The next morning, when his thirst had subsided, he saw that water was flowing in the waterhole, spring, and river. When he went to retrieve his Dharma robe, he had to cut it off with a knife. Also, in India, an old woman had a very filial son. When he was about to go to another country to trade, he carefully instructed his wife, 'Be sure to give my mother clean and hygienic food.' After the son had been away for a long time, the old mother's eyes became blurred, and she saw that the rice was full of hair. Because of this, the old mother developed an abdominal tumor and became very distressed. When the son returned, he asked, 'Mother, have you been well taken care of?' The mother said, 'Son, after you left, your wife did not give me good food. She mixed rice and hair together and gave it to me, so I got this disease.' The son scolded his wife, and the wife said, 'I only gave her clean and hygienic food, but it seems that my mother's eyes are having problems. You feed her the rice yourself.' The son gave his mother clean rice, but the mother said, 'Son, you used to be very filial to me, but now you listen to your wife. The rice is full of hair.' The son realized that his mother's eyes had a problem, so he said, 'Mother, your eyes are sick, you hold this bowl of rice yourself.' Then he called a doctor to treat his mother's eyes. After the doctor cured her, the son asked his mother to look at the rice again, and there was not a single hair in it. The old mother then realized from the bottom of her heart that it was because of her eyes, and thought, 'I have not eaten a single hair, so why am I sick?' When the doubt in her heart disappeared, the disease in her abdomen disappeared like a rainbow. As it says in the oral instructions of the lineage of lamas: 'The mind is deluded by sleep, drugs, diseases, and demons. The eyes have illusions, blurring, dizziness, and sparks flying.' Therefore, through the three aspects of scriptural authority, reasoning, and oral instructions --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
