Now, there are two aspects: 'cause' and 'specific meaning'. Firstly, as it appears in the scriptures of the wise, the great teacher Glorious Candrakīrti (Śrī Candrakīrti) stated in his great treatise 'Illuminating Lamp' (Pradīpoddyotana): 'What is the name of this treatise? For whom is it made? Who is the author? What is the extent of this treatise? What is the purpose of this treatise?' Here, it will also be explained in terms of five points in accordance with the five questions raised. As mentioned above, what is the origin of the name of this treatise? For what kind of beings was it made? By which teacher was it made? By what is the content and meaning summarized? For what purpose was it made? In short, firstly, what is the origin of the name of this treatise? The term 'poetics' (kāvya) is derived from the content to be expressed, and the term 'mirror' (ādarśa) is derived from its function. Through this, it can also be recognized to which field it belongs. As it is said in the 'Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras' (Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra): 'Without mastering the five sciences, even the noble ones cannot become Omniscient, therefore, to defeat and guide others, and to know everything oneself, one should strive in them.' Therefore, among the five sciences of grammar, logic, medicine, crafts, and inner science, poetics belongs to the branch of grammar or to the field of crafts. Furthermore, Indian paṇḍitas often speak of the 'five minor sciences': knowing grammar prevents confusion about meaning; knowing vocabulary prevents confusion about names; knowing prosody prevents confusion about verses; knowing rhetoric prevents confusion about poetry; knowing dramatics prevents confusion about language. Among these five, poetics is rhetoric. Secondly, for what kind of beings was this treatise made? It was made for those who want to study poetics but do not enjoy listening to the previous extensive treatises. Thirdly, by which teacher was it made? It was composed by the teacher Daṇḍin. Therefore, this is known as 'Daṇḍin's Mirror of Poetics' (Daṇḍyādarśa). Fourthly, by what is the content and meaning summarized? There are about three hundred and seventy-three verses (śloka), and if all are added up, there are about five hundred. The meaning of poetry is summarized by three aspects: body (śarīra), ornamentation (alaṃkāra), and the removal of flaws (doṣa). Ornamentation is further divided into common and uncommon ornaments, and the latter is further divided into ornaments of meaning (arthālaṃkāra), ornaments of sound (śabdālaṃkāra), and ornaments of puns (śleṣālaṃkāra). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
